《Sword of Oaths》 CHAPTER 1 - KEY TO SUCCESS In the bustling heart of KOB¡¯s[1] North Department, the rhythm of military life beats steadily. It''s here our story begins, with a knock that sets everything in motion. ¡ Bernat Roser stands before Warin''s dorm room, a hint of anticipation in his posture. A knock, firm and expected, breaks the silence. [knock knock] Warin: ¡°Enter¡± Bernat enters the room. Bernat enters, to find Warin coming out of the door from the right, where the shower is. Bernat: "The lieutenant needs you." Warin: "What is it about?" Bernat: "No clue." ¡ Suspicion flickers in Warin''s eyes, a playful challenge brewing. Warin: "You''re not trying to hide something from me, are you, Bernat?" Bernat: "Maybe I am. Why don''t you force it out of me?" The tension in the air takes a sudden turn, a serious tone is set up. ¡ Warin: "Then I''ll do just that..." ¡ A moment passes¡ªa stare down, a test of wills. ¡ But then, laughter shatters the tension. Warin: "You''re still not good at this, are you?" Bernat: "Oh shut up, will you... haha." ¡ Together, they journey to the lieutenant''s office, the corridors echoing with their footsteps. Warin: "So, why does the lieutenant actually need me?" Bernat: "No clue honestly." Warin: "Well, let''s hope it''s not something ba-" [whizz!] An arrow, swift and silent, cuts through their banter. Warin''s reflexes snap; the arrow stops in his grasp. ¡ A voice from behind declares its presence. Otto: "Tsk... You should have just let it hit you, Warin." Warin: "..." Otto: "Anyway, it seems you got your hands full at the moment, so see you around~" ¡ If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. Warin and Bernat continue heading towards First Lieutenant Parks¡¯ office. ¡ Upon arrival, the air around First Lieutenant Parks'' office, holds a weight of secrecy. ¡ Warin: ¡°Lieutenant Parks, you wished to see me?¡± First Lieutenant Parks: ¡°Yes¡¡± ¡ Lieutenant Parks¡¯ attention slightly goes towards a seemingly simple looking envelope on his desk. ¡ First Lieutenant Parks: "Listen, Warin, I need you to deliver something to the Central." A slightly annoyed Warin answers with a barrage of questions. Warin: "And what exactly? And why me? Why not the RDS[2]? Isn''t that kind of their job?" First Lieutenant Parks: "Well, to tell you the truth, the contents of the letter are classified even to me. As for why you must deliver it, the Central asked you to do it. More than that, I do not know." Warin: "The top executives of the Central need me??" First Lieutenant Parks: "No point in asking questions to me, go see for yourself. You are allowed to take 4 people to accompany you to the Central." First Lieutenant Parks hands over the envelope, Warin accepts, albeit hesitating. ¡ Decisions made and preparations underway, the scene shifts off-screen as Warin chooses his comrades and they set off in a military vehicle, the distance to Central quickly closing. Yago: "I have never been to the Central, unlike you, Warin! What is the place like?" Warin: "It''s too much of a hassle to tell you, you''ll see for yourself." Tomor: "Yago, you really should start treating this as a serious mission instead of a summer camp trip." Yago: "Look at this guy pretending he''s not even a little bit excited to go to the Central." Bernat: "You guys talk too much, keep an eye out for any potential hijackers and shut up." Valdis: "Still, I am pretty eager to know what the contents of the letter are for it to be needing a full-armed vehicle of 5 soldiers to deliver..." Warin: "You''re right on the money, maybe it''s the national lottery winning number?! ha-ha" Silence follows, a testament to the joke''s reception. Bernat: "Not going to lie, that was a shit joke, Warin." ¡ Upon arrival at Central, the group disperses, each member tasked with exploring this new environment under the guise of their first visit. Warin: "Don''t cause a ruckus and in 2 hours let''s meet up again here at the entrance of the main hall." The comrades cheerfully salute and give an affirmation to Warin¡¯s wish. Bernat, Valdis, Yago, Tomor: "Roger!" ¡ The pivotal moment comes as Warin, standing before the Top Executives, delivers the envelope. Recognition of his battlefield heroics leads to discussions of a future filled with more responsibility. Top Executive Ludo Markload: "We have heard many of your heroics on the battlefield, Second Lieutenant Warin Radboud. We personally requested you to deliver this letter, since we were thinking of giving you more freedom, as First Lieutenant, what do you think?" A slight smile on Warin¡¯s face that cannot have been prevented is seen. Warin: "I am happy to contribute to the many noble battles I fought for our KOB[1], that is why I am here. I appreciate your words and appreciation of my devotion on and off the battlefield. A position of First Lieutenant comes with great responsibilities, but I am ready to take these on." Top Executive Sarah Parkas: "Great to hear, briefing of your new responsibilities as First Lieutenant will happen in your North Department. For now, you are dismissed." Warin: "Roger!" ¡ With the meeting concluded, Warin''s steps echo in the hallway, the weight of potential promotion lingering in his thoughts. Abruptly, a hand grabs him from around a corner, pulling him into an unexpected encounter. Warin: ¡°¡!¡± ¡ Bernat: "LOOK WHAT I FOUND" (shows a mysterious key) Warin: "Don¡¯t tell me..." Bernat: "...!" _______________________________________ [1] Kingdom of Berk [2] Royal Delivery Service CHAPTER 2 - A risk worth taking The hushed corridors of the Central echo with the urgent whispers of Warin and Bernat, their conversation a mixture of disbelief and tension. ¡ Warin: "You stole a key?!! What do you mean your body moved on its own??" Bernat: "Exactly as I said! I saw an open door, went in, and there it was on the table. I just took it!" Warin: "Well, GO PUT IT BACK!!" Bernat: "I won''t. I''ve got a hunch this key means something... a call of fate!" Warin: "You sound nuts. It''s probably just a key to the room you took it from!" Bernat: "Just trust me on this one!!!" ¡ Warin, not wanting to doubt his lifelong friend¡¯s words, puts his faith in the story Bernat just told him. ¡ Warin: "...whatever, do what you want. But I''m not part of this mess." Resigned yet curious, Warin agrees to move on. Together, they rendezvous with their comrades in the main hall, preparing for their journey back to the North Department. Warin: "Mission''s over, fellas. Time to head back, let¡¯s pack up." Yago: "This place is so HUGE! I never realized¡" Tomor: "You can say that again, I envy the cafeteria they have here, it¡¯s so spacious!¡± Valdis: "Warin, please just give us a bit longer, why are we in a rush? We can enjoy our time here a bit longer, right? " Warin: "You sound like a girl who finally got permission to go out with some friends, quit your yammering and let¡¯s move. " Valdis: "There we have it, the famous party pooper behavior¡¡± Warin: "Shut up will you, we¡¯ll visit Central again another time. Promise. " ¡ As they journey home, the recent finding of the mysterious key is filling the conversational space. Yago: "Maybe it''s a key to some epic treasure!" Valdis: "Or some officer''s private bathroom..." Tomor: "Taking it was a bad idea, regardless." Warin: "Don''t lump me into this. I wanted no part of it!" ¡ This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. Back at the North Department, Warin delivers the message to Lieutenant Parks, who congratulates him with the unexpected news of a promotion. Yet, the key''s mystery continues to gnaw at him. Warin: "Lieutenant Parks, the message is successfully delivered to the Central, here is the Receive Token[1]. " Lieutenant Parks: "Thanks, also congratulations, Lieutenant Warin! " Warin: "Thank you, Sir! But how do you already know of the news?" Lieutenant Parks: "Well, there was another envelope that arrived during your time at the Central, it was addressed to you. I recognized the stamp used on it, since I received a similar one when I got promoted. " Warin: "Sharp as ever I see...! " Lieutenant Parks: "Remember, a good pair of eyes will get you further than any muscle will ever do! " ¡ As Warin is returning to his dorm, he can¡¯t help but wonder about the mysterious key. Upon entering his dorm, Warin is surprised to find his friends, already deep in speculation about the key''s purpose. ¡ Warin: "What the¡. WHY IS EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM IN MY ROOM?!" Bernat: "Shh, keep it down, we''re trying to figure out what this key is for." Yago: "Yeah, stop being a party pooper, Warin, it doesn''t mean that you''re promoted to First Lieutenant that you have to play boss now. " Warin: "Huh? How''d you know about the promotion? I haven¡¯t told anyone yet!" ¡ Valdis: "There was a letter addressed to you and we read it, congrats buddy!" ¡ Warin: "You guys are the worst, privacy doesn''t exist in your vocabulary or what!?" ¡ Ignoring Warin¡¯s irritation, Tomor shifts the conversation back to the topic of the mysterious key. Tomor: "So, we all want to know what the key is for, but how do we find that out? " ¡ Warin slightly agitated, outs his honest opinion about the key once again. Warin: "I still believe our best course of action is to give the key back, really. " ¡ Bernat looks at Warin, with eyes full of determination and a wish to understand why exactly the key magically fell in his possession. Bernat: "Warin, my body moved on his own, really. " A sudden silence fills the air. ¡ Yago, Tomor, Valdis: "We believe him, Warin. " Valdis: "If Bernat really wanted to lie about it, he would have made up a more believable story. " Warin: "That is true, but still... I really do believe you Bernat, however I still think this is not the best choice. " Ignoring Warin¡¯s advice, the comrades try to come up with a waterproof plan that will help them unravel the truth of the mysterious key. ¡ After hearing the plan, Warin can¡¯t help but to give some harsh critique. Warin: "So, this is what you call a waterproof plan? Really guys? Even a pigeon can do better. This is way to reckless. " ¡ Fueled by a worry for his friends¡¯ safety as well as a glimpse of personal intrigue for the mysterious key, Warin proposes a better, well thought out plan. ¡ The plan is straightforward but safe and minimizes the risk. Warin explains how he will use his new status as Lieutenant as part of his recent promotion and his soon-to-be relocation to the Central as an integral part of the plan. ¡ Warin: "Listen very well. I will be re-located to the Central next week, following my promotion to Lieutenant. I will take the key with me and periodically check which doors I am able to open with it, until I find the one door this key leads to¡" Bernat: "¡And where do we come in the picture? "¡± Warin: "To minimalize risk, you guys will be keeping track of the doors I have already tried. You¡¯ve seen how huge the Central is. I need someone to help me keep count. Also, with only me searching for the door, our chances of getting caught is nearly zero. " Valdis: "Is there nothing else we can do? It feels like you¡¯re doing the heavy lifting? "¡± Warin: "There is actually, you guys can also gather some information about the Central, maybe there are some hidden doors I missed. " ¡ Warin: "As for why only I check for the doors, you guys can¡¯t get away with always asking permission to go to the central to try some doors. You know how tight security is with giving permission to enter Central, especially if you¡¯re not at least a Lieutenant¡" Chatter between the friends about the proposed plan follows Warin¡¯s explanation and reasoning. ¡ After a while, everyone seems to agree with Warin¡¯s well thought out plan. It¡¯s a go sign. ¡ Yago: " As expected of the soon to be First Lieutenant, you know your sneaky planning stuff! " Warin: "We''re literally doing illegal stuff please don''t praise me for this... "
[1] A Receive Token is an official token that confirms the correct delivery of an important classified document CHAPTER 3 - 99th Division The morning sun heralds a new chapter in Warin''s life as his alarm cuts through the silence. A montage of his morning routine unfolds. ¡ Waking up, showering, breakfast, a glance at the morning paper, stretching, and brushing his teeth, each action a step closer to his new role. ¡ Today marks his transition to the Central, stepping into the shoes of the First Lieutenant of the 99th Division. Packing his belongings, Warin casts a final, reflective look around his room, memories of the past two years flashing before his eyes. ¡ Warin: "Time sure does fly when you''re alive..." Closing the door behind him, he makes his way to the North Department¡¯s main hall, where his friends and Lieutenant Parks await to bid him farewell. ¡ Yago: "GOOD MORNING WARIN!¡± Bernat: "HEEEYYY GOODMORNING FIRST LIEUTENANT!!!" Warin: "Good morning, fellas. Morning, Lieutenant Parks." Lieutenant Parks: "Morning, comrade." Warin: "Thanks for coming to see me off. But you know I''ll visit North HQ often, right?" Tomor: "Don''t be so cold, Warin. It''s a big change not having the team together all the time." Warin: "That''s true. Thanks, I really appreciate it, guys." Yago, Bernat, Valdis, Tomor: "Don''t sweat it!" As they continue to chatter around for a little while, a vehicle¡¯s noise can be heard. ¡ Warin: "Seems like my ride''s here. See you guys soon!" Yago: "Bye!! " Bernat: "Bring some souvenirs if you visit! " Valdis: "Don¡¯t forget us! " Tomor: "See ya!" ¡ A strong farewell later, Warin walks outside to find the designated driver waiting for him. Driver: "They sure seem like a handful!" ¡ Warin: "More like two hands full..." (smiles) Warin sets off to the Central, with eyes set out in the light blue sky above him, he leaves with a feeling of melancholy. ¡ Upon arriving at the Central, Warin goes through the usual security checks and enters the main hall, where he is greeted by a welcoming face. Guide Emily: "Welcome, First Lieutenant Radboud! Here is the key to your new room, your official 99th Division badge, and Lieutenant emblem badge." Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.Warin: "Thanks!" Warin''s new quarters, room 227, offer a stark contrast to his previous accommodations. Warin: "Whoa, this is more spacious than the Lieutenant rooms in the North Department¡Lieutenant Parks would be jealous!¡± ¡ Warin wanders over to the alluring window that is next to his bed. Warin: "Oh wow, what a beautiful sight on the King¡¯s Forest from here¡¡± As Warin is staring out of his window, in awe of the beautiful view, he is woken up from his daydreaming by a knock on his door. [knock knock] Warin: ¡°...! Come in! " The door slowly opens. Revealing the welcoming face from earlier. ¡ Guide Emily: "Lieutenant Radboud, I hope you''ve settled in a bit. Are you ready to meet your division?" As Warin is reminded that his new role demands a higher work ethic, he contemplates his recent choices. Warin (thinking): "Oh boy, I''ve been here for 5 minutes and already regret this promotion." ¡ Warin: "Sure, I''m ready. Lead the way!" Following Emily to Building F, Warin is get¡¯s a small breakdown of the Central¡¯s physical layout. Guide Emily: "Is it your first visit to the Central, Lieutenant Radboud? " Warin: "Not really¡however, I haven¡¯t visited anything else besides Building A¡" Guide Emily: "I see. Let me give you a short breakdown of what makes the Central so special. " Warin: "Please! That would be great! " Guide Emily: "The Central, is the biggest war department of the KOB, hosting 26 buildings, that¡¯s why they are lettered A to Z. " Warin: "¡I knew the Central was big¡ but 26 buildings is way more than I would have guessed! " Guide Emily: "Haha, you¡¯re not the first one to say that. " Warin: "¡Also I have a question. Wondering if you know the answer? " Guide Emily: "Hmm? Ask away, we¡¯ll see if I know my KOB history well, haha... " Warin: "Is it true that the Central is the center of the world? " Guide Emily: "I have been told so as well. Furthermore the Center Continent is the center of the world, so by default the 5 war departments are at the center of the world¡with the Central being completely set in the middle¡" Warin: "¡center of the world... " As Warin and Emily are walking down a corridor in building F, they are greeted by the raucous sounds of people coming out of a room at the end of the corridor. Warin (thinking): "I wonder what that noise is? " Guide Emily: "We¡¯re almost there. " Warin and Emily arrive at the room where the noise was coming from. ¡ Warin, after entering the meeting room, narrowly avoids a flying water bottle. Warin: "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS???" In shock Warin is still trying to make something out of this¡while he stands at the entrance of the meeting room, he looks at the lively faces already present. Guide Emily: "These are the selected soldiers for your 99th Division, they are a handful, but I am sure you can manage¡" Warin: "You don¡¯t say¡" Guide Emily: "Well then, I will take my leave. Good luck! " ¡ The chaos subsides, and as Emily left, Warin finds himself facing his new team. ¡ Warin explains the current situation and who he is. A small introduction to bring some context to his new division members. ¡ Warin: "...And that''s how it is. From today onwards, I''m your Lieutenant. Looking forward to working with you." Miro: "Question!!!" Warin: "Yes, Miro?" Miro: "Can we call you Warin instead of Lieutenant Radboud?" Daw: "No, let''s call him Lieutenant Monkey instead, hahaha!" Aki: "Or ''useless man'', just like you, Daw." Daw: "Say that again to my face, you wannabe human!" Karen: "HAHAHAHAHA!" Aki: "WANNABE HUMAN??? YOU''RE THE ONE LOOKING LIKE YOU WERE STUCK MID HUMAN EVOLUTION, YOU APE." ¡ Warin annoyed at their childish behavior, yells on the top of his lungs, demanding space to conversate his thoughts. ¡ Warin: "SILENCEEEEEEEEEEEE! " ¡ A silence fills the meeting room. ¡ Warin: "¡You guys are a real handful. I hope your skill in battle is as good as your banter. If you do your job, I don''t care what you call me." ¡ Seemingly happy with the terms offered by Warin, the team outs their agreement with it. Karen, Aki, Miro, Daw: "Deal!" Warin: "Now go get ready, we already have a small mission to complete. It involves providing security for the transport of a type of new generation ammunition. We have to deliver them to the East Department. " Miro: " Sweet! I never been to the East Department! " Karen: " The stories and rumors say it''s the most deadly place to be at as a soldier on the battlefield! " Daw: "eeek--" Aki: "What''s up Ape-man ur trembling like a kitty cat! " Daw: "¡you wish! That''s because I am excited! " Warin (thinking): " I hope this goes well. sigh¡" ¡ Meanwhile, somewhere else in a random clandestine meeting, two Top Executives report to a mysterious figure. ¡ Mysterious Figure: "..Was the bait taken? " ¡ Top Executive: "¡Yes. " ¡ Mysterious Figure: "¡Good, standby until further notice." ¡ Top Executives: "Understood, Lord." CHAPTER 4 - East Department Outside Building A of the Central, the 99th Division appears ready to embark on their first mission. ... Warin explains, "As I mentioned earlier, the plan is straightforward. We need to escort an armory truck filled with next-generation ammunition to the East Department." Aki inquires, "What exactly is next-generation ammunition?" Warin responds, "It''s highly classified, for sure. Even I wasn''t privy to this information." Daw jokes, "Maybe it''s just food and booze for a surprise party! You know, since we just became a new Division." Aki retorts, "You''re hopeless, Daw." Daw quips back, "And you''re ugly. I''d take hopeless over ugly any day of the week." Aki warns, "Say that again, you¡ª" As tensions rise between the two Division members, Warin''s voice cools the atmosphere. Warin intervenes, "Really, guys? Stop this cat and mouse game for a moment, for God''s sake." Aki states, "I am an atheist." Daw jests, "...I would be too, if God made me that ugly...HAHAHAH." Aki threatens, "You son of a¡ª" Warin firmly says, "STOP. Seriously, time is of the essence." Silence follows. Warin details that the shortest route from Central to the East Department takes 3 hours. The plan is to reach the East Department by sundown, stay a day, and leave the next day. The route will be displayed on a map, taking the main path of East Road (E-00). All paths are named after their cardinal directions and numbered accordingly. ... Before departing, they gather equipment and supplies from the armory. Armed and ready, they take two military vehicles, with Aki and Daw driving the front vehicle, Miro and Karen the rear, and Lieutenant Radboud in the armory truck passenger seat alongside Lexo, the driver. They exit through the East Gate of the Central. ... Two hours into the journey, Warin announces a 15-minute break. The group engages in casual conversation, sharing their favorite foods and resting. "Bread with honey, is there even something better?", Miro exclaims in full confidence. Karen reacts a bit disgusted to the weird combination of food, "..that''s an interesting choice...I guess? I will keep it simple however, and just go for a scoop of chocolate pudding..." "...soo basic of your, Karen.", Aki says. "I am telling you, try out the melon flavored pudding for once!" "Maybe next time...haha", Karen answers a bit shaky. Once the break ends, Warin gathers everyone to resume the journey. "Sorry to end the chatter here but it''s time, let''s move, 15 minutes are over!" ... Upon arrival at the East Department''s security checkpoint, Warin announces their mission to deliver the ammunition. After passing the security checks and receiving a Receipt Token, they are informed they can only stay for the night due to space limitations. "We''re nearing full capacaity here, 1 night is all we can offer for you, Lieutenant Radboud. Our apologies.", says the East Department Guide. Warin, smiling, declares his heartfelt gratitude, "No worries, thank you for making something possible regardless!" If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. Lieutenant Warin Radboud is assigned his own room, while Miro and Daw share a room, as do Aki and Karen. Warin commends their work and advises them to rest up for the next day''s departure. As the sun dipped low, painting the sky with shades of orange and purple, Warin found himself aimlessly wandering the halls of the East Department. His feet carried him through the echoing corridors, each step a testament to the day''s exhaustion and accomplishments. It was during this aimless journey that he stumbled upon a figure whose presence in the East Department was as unexpected as it was significant¡ªAdmiral Kenzo Furaka, the esteemed Admiral of the East Department. Curiosity piqued, Warin approached the Admiral with a respectful nod. "Admiral Furaka," he began, his voice steady yet filled with intrigue, "may I inquire what brings you to the East Department this evening?" The Admiral, a man of stern appearance but approachable demeanor, turned to Warin with a thoughtful look. "Lieutenant Radboud, isn''t it?" he replied, recognizing the young officer. "I''m here on official business¡ªdiscussing war plans with the leadership of the East War Department. My duties often take me between the East and the Central for such matters." Warin''s brow furrowed in surprise. "I wasn''t aware that war meetings and plans were centralized at the Central," he admitted, revealing his novice understanding of the military''s inner workings. Admiral Furaka offered a knowing smile, the kind that spoke of secrets long kept. "Indeed, the most critical meetings and strategic decisions are made within the confines of the Intelligence Chamber, or I.C., as we call it. It''s a closely guarded secret, known only to those at the Commodore level and above." Warin''s eyes widened in awe, the mythical I.C. he had heard whispers of was real. "I always thought the I.C. was just a legend," he confessed. "The I.C. is very real, Lieutenant," the Admiral assured, his tone serious. "And it''s because you''re seen as a promising officer that I''m sharing this with you. Consider it a test of your discretion and loyalty. As you climb the ranks, such tests will become more frequent. Are you prepared to keep this secret?" Warin felt a surge of pride at the Admiral''s words, a mix of honor and responsibility filling his chest. "I won''t let you down, Admiral Furaka. Thank you for trusting me with this information," he vowed, the gravity of the moment not lost on him. With a final nod of mutual respect, they parted ways, each absorbed in their own thoughts. Later, alone on the balcony of his room, Warin stared out into the night, the stars twinkling like distant beacons of the unknown. The revelation of the I.C., the weight of the secret now shared, and the trust bestowed upon him by Admiral Furaka swirled in his mind. It was a pivotal moment, a crossroads in his military career that whispered of the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. As the cool night air brushed against his face, Warin couldn''t help but wonder what the future held for him and how the path to the I.C. would shape his destiny. As dawn broke over the East Department, the first rays of sunlight chased away the shadows of night, casting a soft glow over the compound. Warin, alongside Miro, Daw, Aki, and Karen, were already up and bustling about, ready to depart back to Central HQ. Their brief stay had been surprisingly peaceful, a stark contrast to the war-front''s chaos they had imagined. "I didn''t expect it to be so calm here," Aki remarked, packing up his gear with a hint of disappointment. Miro nodded in agreement, "Yeah, the rumors had us believe otherwise." Karen, always the voice of reason, chimed in, "We''re quite a distance from the actual East War front. That''s why it''s peaceful." Aki and Miro exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of annoyance and relief; the myths of the front had been debunked, at least for now. With their gear secured and spirits mixed, the team set out toward the Central, retracing their steps along the main East Road (E-00). ... ... Meanwhile, in a starkly different setting, a cold, snowy forest became a battleground of chaos and fear. Colonel Sam Foster, amidst the cacophony of explosions and gunfire, bellowed orders to his brigade, which was caught off-guard by an ambush. "How did they ambush my whole brigade like this?" he roared, frustration and disbelief in his voice. "And what''s that new weapon they have? It explodes on impact, killing instantly, and its range is absurd. We can''t even see where the shots are coming from. Being in this forest puts us at a severe disadvantage!" "Private Splyce!" he called out over the din of battle. "Send out a rescue signal to Central!" "Aye, Colonel!" Splyce responded, his fingers already moving to transmit the distress call. As more soldiers fell to the unseen threat, the scene shifted to the Central Communication Unit (CCU), where the distress signal, urgent and desperate, was received. "Damn those UOM fools; we''re shorthanded!" Vice Admiral Herto Stessler cursed upon hearing the news. "Who can we send?" At that moment, a second messenger entered, breaking the tense atmosphere. "Sir! Lieutenant Radboud has returned from his mission and wishes to deliver the Receive Token." "Radboud? That newbie?" Stessler thought, skepticism laced with a begrudging acceptance of the limited options available. "Well, let him in!" Warin, unaware of the situation he was about to be thrust into, stepped forward with the Receive Token in hand. "Lieutenant Radboud of the 99th Division reporting, Vice Admiral Stessler." "Good job," Stessler dismissed the formalities, his mind racing with the urgency of the moment. "Listen, I have a new mission for you. It''s very urgent." Warin''s confusion was palpable, his face a mask of questions as he processed the sudden shift in expectations. ... Warin: "...?" CHAPTER 5 - Trouble brewing in the West! In the crisp, quiet hours of noon, Vice Admiral Herto Stessler''s office felt like the calm before the storm. Warin stood rigid, his spine straight as an arrow, while Stessler paced behind his desk, each step echoing like a somber drumbeat in the vastness of the impending crisis. "We''ve received a distress call from the West Department," Stessler finally halted, his gaze piercing Warin with the weight of his words. "Colonel Foster¡¯s 8th West Brigade is in dire need of evacuation. The situation is... grim." Warin shifted uncomfortably, the gravity of the task dawning on him. "Sir, is there truly no one else? Am I... Are we capable of conducting a rescue of this magnitude?" Doubt shadowed his features, a rare crack in his usually steadfast demeanor. Stessler, leaning heavily against the dark wood of his desk, let out a weary sigh. "In truth, you''re not qualified for this, Warin. Not on paper, not by experience. But we''re out of options, and time is a luxury we don''t possess." He looked at Warin, his eyes somber yet burning with an unspoken challenge. "It''s a gamble, and frankly, a near-suicide mission. You and your squad rescuing a brigade of 5000? It''s unheard of." ... Yet, it was Warin''s response that cut through the despair. "Sir, if there''s even a chance to save those men, then our lives are a price I''m willing to pay. We all are." His voice was a beacon of resolve in the dim light of the office. Stessler, visibly moved by Warin''s courage, extended a dossier across the desk. "This is the latest intel from the West Department. Godspeed, Lieutenant." The words were a benediction, a prayer for the daring soul before him. Without another word, Warin turned on his heel, the mission''s weight settling on his shoulders as he set out to gather his team. ... Gathered in the dim light of the shining sun, Warin''s squad listened intently as he laid out the mission. Miro and Aki''s eyes sparkled with the thrill of the unknown, eager for the action, while Daw and Karen exchanged uneasy glances, their apprehension a tangible cloud in the crisp morning air. "We''ll be swift, taking only one armored vehicle to blend in and move quickly. Stealth is our ally," Warin explained, mapping out the terrain and their approach. "Our objective is not just survival but to strike at the heart of the enemy with what they least expect: a direct assault to capture their new weapon." This novel''s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. "The terrain exists of dense forests", Warin mentioned. "We''ll use this to our advantage." As night fell and they approached their target, the dense forest enveloped them in darkness, their mission a shadow moving against the backdrop of an uncertain war. Leaving their transport near the West Department and leaving for their goal through the dense forest, luck favored them. Two UOM soldiers, unsuspecting, became their key to understanding the enemy''s new terror. Warin, realizing the ammunition matched what they had secretly transported to the East Department, chose silence over revelation, his mind racing with questions and betrayal. As stated beforehand, the plan unfolded in the darkness: Aki and Miro to lead the brigade''s survivors to safety, Karen and Daw to secure the West Department with the stolen weapon, and Warin, from his hidden vantage point, to oversee the evacuation. ... Yet, as Aki and Miro found the brigade in disarray, the loss of Colonel Foster a blow to their morale, they stepped into roles of leadership unforeseen but necessary, guiding the brigade''s remnants with quiet determination. Splitting the 4000 survivors and leading them in the darkness of the dense forest to safety. ... Karen and Daw, presenting Stessler''s command token to the leading Admiral, Hanna Kehlman at the West Department, were granted permission to enter, their mission critical to the defense and survival of their forces. ... In the meantime, from his secluded lookout, Warin watched, pride and fear warring within him. The smoothness of their operation, a dance on the edge of disaster, felt too perfect, too unchallenged. ... "Everything''s going smooth...why am I uneasy then?", Warin muttered to himself. ... His musings were cut short by the cold kiss of steel against his neck, a whispered threat in the darkness. "Move and you''re dead." Calm in the face of danger, Warin couldn''t help but commend the skill of his unseen foe. "Impressive stealth," he remarked, his voice steady, even as the blade pressed closer. "Shut your mouth.", the foe ordered, which was met with Warin''s wry acknowledgment, ... "Sheesh...tough crowd...," a moment of levity in the face of uncertainty. .... CHAPTER 6 - One step ahead In the shadowed depths of the dense forest, Warin found himself face to face with his captor, a UOM soldier with a steely gaze and hands that had swiftly secured his own behind his back. "Where are my friends?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the chilly air. Her two comrades were missing, and she was convinced Warin knew of their whereabouts. Feigning ignorance, Warin quipped, "What''s the matter? Lost your playmates in the woods?" His remark earned him a sharp rebuke, her patience thinning. "Stop playing games. Speak truthfully, or I''ll end you here and now," she warned, her tone leaving no room for doubt. Sensing her deadly seriousness, Warin conceded, mentioning the ambush on the two UOM soldiers, adding a morbid joke about the forest''s cold possibly claiming one of them by now. His attempt at humor was met with a fierce slap, her anger flaring. "Don''t you dare joke about my friends," she hissed, her loyalty fierce as the cold wind that whispered between the trees. Under her stern demand, Warin reluctantly led her to Kasper and Wendy, her companions, now bound and gagged. ... As she released them, the trio''s reunion was a mix of relief and gratitude, with cries of "Hera!" filling the air as they thanked their savior. Warin, seizing the moment, asked, "How about you free me too, then?" Hera scoffed at his audacity. "Are you dumb or just playing the fool?" "So, I''ll take that as a no?" Warin retorted, the corners of his mouth twitching in amusement. She was unamused. "You''re going nowhere but to our camp for interrogation," she declared, her resolve as firm as the ground beneath their feet. The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings. Warin sighed, feigning resignation. "Sounds like a hassle. Well, this is goodbye for now, Hera." Her confusion was palpable. "What are you talking abou¡ª" Her words were cut short as Warin, having already freed himself, dropped a smoke bomb. The forest erupted in chaos, visibility reduced to zero. As the smoke began to clear, Hera, Wendy, and Kasper stood bewildered, realizing too late Warin''s cunning. "When did he...?" Hera muttered to herself, piecing together the moments of her distraction. Meanwhile, Warin, ever the strategist, had melted into the night, his absence a silent testament to his foresight. ... Hera, though frustrated, couldn''t help but respect the cleverness of her adversary, contacting her fellow UOM operatives to warn them of Warin''s ingenuity. But the news that the brigade had vanished into the night, fires doused and tracks covered, hit them hard. "This is not good...don''t tailgate them!", Hera yells to her UOM operatives. "They stole 2 of our weapons, we''ll be the hunted if you run after them in this dark forest!". ... "It''s all too ''lucky''," Hera mused, realizing the evacuation and theft of their weapons were part of a larger strategy designed to outmaneuver them. ... Back at the West Department, Warin''s arrival was met with a scene of quiet triumph. Aki, Miro, Karen, and Daw had executed their parts flawlessly, the brigade safe within the walls, and the new weapons in their possession. Their success was Warin''s doing, a plan so daring and precise that it had turned the tide. "Good job, team! A hundred points each!" Warin praised, his smile genuine and proud. "Thanks, Lieutenant!" they responded in unison, their address of Warin as ''Lieutenant Radboud'' marking a newfound respect forged in the crucible of their impossible mission. As word of their success reached the Central, Vice Admiral Herto Stessler received the report with a mix of surprise and admiration. "Well, well, well... It seems this kid has more in him than I thought," he mused, the corners of his mouth lifting in a rare smile. ... "So, we have a new Colonel..." ... CHAPTER 7 - COLONEL RADBOUD Warin, standing in his designated room within the West Department, was swiftly changing his clothes, preparing for the journey back to THE Central. The calm before departure was shattered by a knock at the door. Upon opening it, he found Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Alfin, the second in command. "Ready to depart?" Alfin inquired, his tone signaling the urgency of their mission''s conclusion. "Just about, though I need to ensure my team is as well," Warin replied, his mind on Miro, Aki, Daw, and Karen. "They''re prepared," Alfin assured him, prompting Warin to nod in agreement. "Then I''m ready. Lead the way." As they walked towards the main hall, curiosity got the better of Warin. "Where are we headed?" he asked, trying to decipher Alfin''s intentions. "Just a little patience, you''ll see," was all Alfin offered, a hint of mystery in his voice. The main hall was where they reunited with Miro, Aki, Daw, and Karen, all summoned there under Alfin''s instructions. The group was then led outside, greeted by the unexpected sight of the entire brigade, formerly under Colonel Foster, arranged in a meticulous formation. Confusion spread among Warin and his friends, their faces a canvas of questions. The air was thick with anticipation until Admiral Hanna Kehlman''s voice cut through, urging the soldiers to express their gratitude. After a heartfelt thank you for their heroic efforts and the capture of the secret ammunition, she departed with wishes of luck and fortune. Then came the moment orchestrated by Alfin; a countdown led to a resounding shout of "THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!" from the brigade, a chorus of gratitude that warmed the heart. "We were simply following orders, glad we could assist," Warin responded, humility in his voice despite the pride swelling in his chest. Alfin''s gaze lingered on Warin. "You''ve shown immense potential. Your planning and foresight are unparalleled." The journey back to the Central was a montage of camaraderie and reflection, the armored vehicle carrying them home alongside the echoed farewells of the brigade and Alfin. ... Upon their return to the Central as the noon sun embraced the compound, the squad was greeted by Emily, the guide in the main hall. Before they could disperse, she shared the news that brightened their weary spirits further¡ªa three-day rest period granted, starting the next day. Aki''s eyes lit up with the possibilities. "Maybe I''ll go hunting!" she exclaimed, already envisioning the wilderness. This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience. Daw, with thoughts of home warming his heart, declared, "I should visit my family!" Miro, ever the lover of simple pleasures, sighed in relief. "Finally, I can sleep as much as I want..!" Karen, slightly overwhelmed by the luxury of free time, pondered aloud, "I''ve never had a 3-day rest period...what should I do??" Warin, amidst the excitement of his team, suggested pragmatically, "Let''s first calm down and grab some supper." They acknowledged with a collective "Roger," their steps quickening towards their respective rooms for a well-deserved break. Emily then turned to Warin with a reminder that mirrored his team''s directive, but with a twist. "You have a 3-day rest period as well, of course. But Vice Admiral Herto Stessler awaits your presence before you take your leave." Grateful for the guidance, Warin nodded to Emily and made his way to Stessler''s office, pondering the nature of this unexpected summoning after such a monumental mission. ... Entering Vice Admiral Herto Stessler''s office, Warin was immediately greeted with a booming laugh. "WELL WELL WELL IF IT ISN''T OUR COLONEL WARIN RADBOUD! YOU REALLY DID SAVE A WHOLE BRIGADE IN A COUPLE OF HOURS WITH ONLY ONE DIVISION!" Stessler''s voice filled the room with a mixture of jest and admiration. Warin, taken aback, managed a humble reply. "Thank you for your kind words, Vice Admiral, but I couldn''t have done it without my division and some good old luck. However, what do you mean by ''Colonel''?" Stessler chuckled heartily, "It seems you''re a greenhorn after all! JOKING! It means exactly as I said. You''re being promoted to Colonel right here, right now!" "But how? I''m a First Lieutenant. Before becoming Colonel, I need to have gone through the ranks of Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel first!" Warin''s confusion was evident, struggling to grasp the reality of such a swift ascent. "Warin, this mission was supposed to be impossible. Your leadership skills, war sense, and planning clearly exceed even that of a Colonel. However, I was only able to grant you no more than a Colonel rank as of now. Of course, you can decline, but that means I would lose face, so you better accept it," Stessler''s laughter echoed, "ZEHAHAHAH!" Flattered and somewhat overwhelmed, Warin accepted, "In the name of King Berk the First, I, Warin Radboud, hereby accept my promotion to the rank of Colonel. I understand the higher-ups, including the top executives, are approving of this. I will do my utmost best to further reach all of your expectations." "That''s EXACTLY what I wanted to hear," Stessler continued, laying out Warin''s new responsibilities, including selecting eight Brigade captains and informing him of the upcoming challenges. "Enjoy your rest, but as a freshly made Colonel, there won''t be many of those! Zahahahahah!" Leaving Stessler''s office, Warin mused aloud, "Colonel? You''ve got to be kidding me. Now I''ve got to babysit 5000 people. What a big drag..." ... Upon arriving at his room, Warin was bombarded with a surprise party by his friends, who had already been informed of his promotion. "CONGRATULATIONS, COLONEL RADBOUD!" they shouted, filling the room with celebration and slight chaos. "What the-," Warin started, only to be interrupted by the enthusiasm of his team, insisting on a three-day-long celebration. Despite his protests for peace, the party was in full swing. Just as Warin stood bewildered at the doorway, a familiar voice chimed in, "Well, it''s good to see you''re still the same old party pooper, Warin! HAHAHAHAH." Turning around, Warin''s surprise turned to joy as he saw Bernat, and behind him, Yago, Valdis, and Tomor, joining in the celebration. ... "......you guys..!" CHAPTER 8 - Alea iacta est The jovial atmosphere in Warin''s room reached new heights with the unexpected arrival of Bernat and his group, blending the celebration into a chaotic but heartwarming reunion. Bernat broke the ice with his trademark humor, "Yo! Long time no see... Mr. COLONEL hehehe!" Yago and Valdis chimed in, their tones laced with playful sarcasm, "Yo! You sure working hard aren''t ya!" Tomor couldn''t resist a jab, "Colonel, huh? Not bad, for someone who''s such a party pooper!" Warin, surrounded by familiar faces, couldn''t hide his mix of surprise and joy, "You guys! So you''re all still alive, aye?.." Bernat feigned offense, "What''s up with that tone you monkey?!" Yago and Tomor piled on, "C''mon, you could have at least acted like you''re happy to see us..." Valdis, ever the blunt one, added, "He''s bad at acting, don''t bother with it. Warin, you suck anyway." Warin retorted with a grin, "Well, glad to see you guys didn''t lose your humor and are as annoying as ever! Haha." Curiosity got the better of Warin, "So how did YOU guys know I was promoted to colonel?" Yago revealed their source, "Well, we overheard it from a group that passed us. They were saying something about throwing you a party because of your promotion to colonel, so we asked Emily the guide where your room is to see what it was about." Bernat pointed an accusatory finger at Aki, Daw, Karen, and Miro, "YEAH, IT WAS THOSE GUYS!" Aki, sensing the new dynamics, asked, "So, Warin, care to explain who these weirdos are?" Valdis and Tomor were quick to defend their dignity, "WEIRDOS?!?!" Bernat, never one to back down, shot back at Aki, "You''re the weirdo here, Miss Rocket." The nickname, a jab at Aki''s height, stirred the room into laughter. Aki, not one to take an insult lying down, retorted, "WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU PEAR LOOKALIKE?!" The room erupted into chaos, with Miro and Daw cheering on the burgeoning argument, while Valdis chuckled at Bernat''s expense. Karen, ever the voice of reason, expressed her desire to leave the madness behind. Amidst the laughter and light-hearted insults, Warin seized the moment to calm the storm, "Well, well, calm down, everyone. I thought we were going to celebrate my promotion? Besides, I have some great news for you guys as well; the timing is perfect!" Warin gathered his eclectic mix of friends for a serious talk amidst the celebratory chaos, ready to share news of his new role and its implications. "So first of all, yes, I will be a Colonel. That also means the 3 days rest I received, just like my division, will be nonexistent because of all the paperwork and whatever I have to do more. Sigh, but that''s not the important part. The important part is that I was told by Vice Admiral Stessler that I need 8 captains to each lead a team within the 5000 member brigade." "That means a captain will lead a team of 625 men. Also, the captains have to be at least Sergeant level or higher, their rank will be promoted to Captain to fit the military rank system of a brigade. Besides, one of the 8 will be a lieutenant colonel, or my second in command." This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. Bernat, ever the joker, couldn''t resist. "Questionnn.!!" Warin, already bracing for what might come, nodded. "Yes, what is it?" "That''s cool and all, but we''re here to party, not to hear your stupid revision on what a colonel and a brigade is," Bernat quipped. ... Bernat''s irreverent comment sparked a wave of laughter. "HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAH NOW THAT''S MORE LIKE IT GOOD ONE BERNAT," Aki roared, slapping a high five with Bernat. They were lost in laughter, while Warin could only gaze into the distance, humorously regretting his existence for a fleeting moment. Karen, watching the sudden shift in dynamics, couldn''t help but remark, "Weren''t you guys at each other''s throat just a minute ago..." "The past is the past, now we''re a power duo, we''re ying and yang of humor!" Aki and Bernat declared, their previous animosity forgotten in the face of camaraderie. Valdis chimed in with a smirk, "You guys are ying and yang of being annoying, that''s for sure." "Yeah, that''s for sure," Daw agreed, the room filled with a mix of laughter and playful jibes. Seizing the moment, Warin addressed the group, "So, Aki and Bernat, to answer your brainless question: you guys are the best I know who also have a rank of sergeant. You 8 will be captains of my brigade!" The room fell silent, the weight of his announcement momentarily pausing the festivities. Tomor clutched his stomach, feigning illness, "Aaarchh, my stomach hurts. I''m gonna go home now, I think." "What a coincidence, me too!" Valdis quickly joined in the pretense, looking for an escape route. Aki and Bernat theatrically groaned, "Uuuehh, we areee aaa... we have being-captain-in-a-brigade-sickness." Warin, fully aware of their antics, dropped the bombshell, "You guys don''t have a choice, by the way. I already gave your names. Too bad." The shock was palpable as everyone processed his declaration, "YOUUUUUW WHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT????!!!" As reality set in, Karen and Daw voiced their anxieties about leading, while the others humorously expressed their dismay through playful punches aimed at Warin. Elevating the surprise, Warin announced Bernat as his second in command. Bernat couldn''t resist flaunting this new rank, "AHAHAHAH, I OUTRANK YOUUUUUUU NANANANANA," he teased Aki, who retorted with a jab at Bernat''s expense, highlighting their enduring banter and friendship. Warin, bringing the room back to a semblance of order, turned solemn. "I chose you guys because there is something more I want to do, and the only ones I can trust with my life are you!" His words brought a focused silence over the group, each member realizing the depth of Warin''s trust and the journey ahead. ... ... In a dimly lit room within the West Department, Admiral Hanna Kehlman stands across from a figure shrouded in shadows, the details of their face obscured, lending an air of mystery to the encounter. Rear Admiral Kehlman reports with a tone of formality, yet there''s a hint of unease as she speaks, "Yes, sir, these were the secret ammunition that was recovered by the 99th Division during their recent rescue mission." The mysterious person, with a voice that carries weight and authority, probes deeper, "Hmmm, I see. Do they look familiar to you, Hanna?" The casual use of her first name underscores his superior position, demanding respect and attention. Caught off guard by the question, Kehlman hesitates before responding, "..No, sir, I fail to understand how they were able to make these, considering we''re way ahead of them in the technological aspect.." The mysterious person acknowledges this with a simple, contemplative, ".....mhm." Then, shifting the focus of their conversation, he expresses his next request, "I will be taking these with me. Can you give me the details of the 99th Division? A list with their names would be perfect." Without hesitation, though clearly troubled by the implications of this request, Admiral Kehlman complies, "Yes, sir! ...Here you go." She hands over a document, the weight of her action palpable in the silence that follows. The mysterious person accepts the list, his eyes scanning the names inscribed within. Though no sound is made as he reads, the pause is telling, his interest piqued as he mentally acknowledges one name in particular, ... "...Radboud..." CHAPTER 9 - Bells ring in Red Village One week later, the serene expanse of Red Village unfolds, bathed in the reddish hue of the setting sun against its snow-covered landscape. Hera, Wendy, and Kasper approach the village entrance, their arrival heralded by the ringing of a bell¡ªa sound that resonates deeply with Kasper. "That bell...only when I hear that I know that I''m home..." he muses, hinting at deeper, yet-to-be-revealed significances of this tradition. ... Wendy remains silent, her thoughts unspoken, while Hera encourages a lighter mood, "It sure does...now cheer up, you two! They are waiting for us, remember why we''re doing this!" Their spirits lifted, they enter the village to a warm reception. Children hug them, and the air fills with chatter. Village Elder August welcomes them, "Glad to see both of you made it back again." Hera respectfully greets him, "Elder August..." suggesting a discussion of importance awaits. "Well, it seems you guys have a lot to say. Let''s go to my place and talk," August proposes. ... On their way, Wendy hands over a significant donation to the village, "Here, take these, these are next month''s rations.." Kasper emphasizes, "Be sure to distribute it well and fairly," underscoring their ongoing commitment to the village''s well-being. ... Once settled at August''s home, the air thick with anticipation, Hera broaches a concerning topic, "The rations...got smaller again.." To which, August nonchalantly responds, "So?" His indifference shocks Hera, Wendy, and Kasper, prompting a unified, surprised reaction, "So?!" ... August explains, "Yes, so? You did not start the war. The village is happy when you come back alive, with or without food." Hera struggles, "Yes...but...we promised! We want you all to eat your full, to live without limitations!" The silence that follows is heavy with unspoken fears and wishes. August''s sigh breaks the silence, "I understand your feelings, younglings, but what can you change right now? Nothing. We can only pray for food, safety, your return, and that the sun and moon continue to watch over us. So don''t be hard on yourselves. Survive. If you do, we will survive as well, rest assured." Their conversation is punctuated by a solemn understanding, and August inquires about their departure. "The day after tomorrow at dawn..." Hera reveals, the reduction in their resting days a silent testament to the war''s demands. August''s parting words offer a gentle reminder of the importance of rest, "Make sure to rest up, you lot need it. Let me know if you need anything." After thanking Elder August for his understanding and assuring him they''d rest well, Hera, Kasper, and Wendy stepped out into the cooling evening of Red Village. Their departure was interrupted by the enthusiastic shouts of a young boy racing toward them. ... "HEEEEEEYYYYYY!!! KASPERRRRR? WENNDYYYYYY? HERAAAAAAA!!!" Rally''s voice, full of excitement, cut through the quiet of the village. Hera, turning to the breathless boy, asked, "Oh, Rally! Were you searching for us?" Panting, Rally nodded, "Yes, I was outside the village, heard the bells...came searching..." Wendy, curiosity piqued, questioned, "Outside the village? What were you doing there? Don''t tell me.." Rally''s eyes sparkled with determination, "YES, I''M READY NOW, TRUST ME, I WAS TRAINING TO JOIN THE UNION OF MANKIND WITH YOU THREE!" Kasper, not surprised by the revelation, sighed, "..I knew he would say that again.." Hera tried to temper Rally''s enthusiasm with a dose of reality, "You''re still training, Rally? I told you, you''re too young. Go help the village with collecting berries, nuts, or whatever else to have food to eat! You''re never joining the UOM!" Rally, undeterred, challenged her, "HEEEEEEEEEHHHH???????!!!!!!!! COME FIGHT ME THEN 1V1 IF I BEAT YOU, I GET TO JOIN!" Kasper reiterated their stance, "Rally, we''ve said this many times: you''re too young. Besides, we don''t even know if the war will last so long for you to even be eligible to join." ... Disappointment washed over Rally''s face, a silent acceptance of their words. Hera softened, "Listen, Rally, we are happy with your support, but everyone has a job to do in these hard times, and yours is here at Red Village. Can we count on you to keep things on leech here while we''re gone?" Rally, his spirits lifted by Hera''s acknowledgement, affirmed, "...Of course!!" Hera smiled, "Thanks!" Their conversation, a brief but meaningful exchange, highlighted the bonds within the village, the shared responsibilities, and the hopes pinned on the younger generation. ... The scene shifted to Hera, Kasper, and Wendy returning to their village home, seeking solace in the familiar. They spent the evening sharing a meal, their conversation a mixture of recounting the day''s events and plans for tomorrow. Hera emphasized the need for rest, a precursor to their duties the following day. As the village succumbed to the night''s embrace, Hera too found rest, her thoughts perhaps wandering to the tasks that lay ahead. The village, enveloped in darkness, was a picture of tranquility, its beauty underscored by the soft glow of the moon. ... ... In a quiet corner of this serene village, under a sprawling tree, lay a simple grave marked with the name... "Hera..." CHAPTER 10 - Departure In the stillness of a night cloaked in the whispers of dreams yet to be dreamed, Hera found herself a prisoner of her own restlessness. The comfort of her bed became a far-off memory as she tossed and turned, each movement a silent plea for sleep''s elusive embrace. Finally, with a soft exhalation that seemed to carry the weight of the world, she conceded to the night, "pffff, can''t sleep..." Compelled by a restlessness that refused to be named, Hera rose from her bed like a specter seeking solace in the moon''s cold light. She descended the stairs with a quiet determination, donning her shoes and a coat as if arming herself against the night''s chill. The door closed behind her with a soft click, a silent farewell to the warmth of home as she ventured into the sleeping village. Her feet carried her with an aimless urgency, eventually pausing at the village''s heart¡ªa fountain that stood as a silent sentinel in the night. It was there, under the watchful gaze of the moon, that her gaze drifted to an empty house, its darkened windows a stark reminder of what once was. Ben and Becky''s home, once a beacon of warmth and laughter, stood silent, a monument to memories of days filled with the simple joy of candy and companionship. With a heavy heart, Hera moved on, her steps leading her past the edge of familiarity and into the embrace of the woods. Here, among the whispering trees, memories of laughter and adventure played in her mind, a stark contrast to the solitude of her current journey. The woods, once a playground of endless possibilities, now stood as guardians of secrets only Hera could understand. Her destination, a clearing where a lone tree stood as a testament to resilience and time, held a grave beneath its boughs¡ªa grave that bore the name "Hera Lancewelt." The revelation, a dramatic interplay of shadow and moonlight, framed a moment of profound connection between Hera and the resting place that mirrored her own name. "I''m home...mother...again..." she whispered, her voice a tender caress against the silence of the night. Sitting before the grave, Hera closed her eyes, allowing a foggy memory to envelop her¡ªa memory from a time when the world was larger, and she, much smaller. The figure of her younger self appeared within this memory, shrouded in shadows that the morning''s light would never reach. It was then, in this moment of solemn remembrance, that the silence was broken. "Seems like you''re not the only one who can''t sleep.." Kasper''s voice, familiar and unexpected, cut through the stillness. Hera turned to find him and Wendy emerging from the shadowed path, their presence a reminder of the bonds that tied them together. "Wendy, Kasper! ...what kept you up?.." Hera asked, her voice tinged with the comfort of their company. "The usual..." Wendy''s response, simple yet laden with an understanding born of shared experiences, spoke volumes. Kasper''s words brought a pragmatic comfort, "Let''s return back home Hera, whatever the cost, we need some rest, or we''ll let the village down and won''t survive our next enlistment because of fatigue.." "You''re right.." Hera agreed, rising to join her friends, the weight of their next deployment a silent companion in their midst. As they prepared to leave, a whisper carried by the wind reached Hera, "take ... care..." Turning, she sought the source, her heart whispering a name in response, "...mom?....will do, see you soon..." Hera answers with a smile on her face, she resumed her walk, the presence of her mother a comfort against the challenges ahead. The days passed, and the time came for departure. The village, once a haven of peace, now stood as the backdrop for farewell. Elder August''s words, "take care you three, and remember what we talked about," echoed as a benediction, while Rally''s assurance, "you can count on me to keep things in check here! Take care and come back fast!" added a note of resilience to their departure. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. "Goodbye everyone!" Hera''s voice, carrying a mix of determination and nostalgia, joined Kasper''s promise of souvenirs and Wendy''s wish for safety, weaving a tapestry of hope and resolve as they set forth towards the West Line, the frontline of a conflict that spanned worlds beyond their village. ... Turning away from the village, they embarked on their path, each step a testament to their resolve. The road was long, and the hours melted into each other as they journeyed through landscapes that whispered tales of times gone by. Upon arriving at the West Line Military Dispatch, the weight of what lay ahead settled heavily upon them. Wendy, ever the realist, sighed, "Sigh, here we go again.." Kasper, trying to inject a spark of optimism, chided, "Cheer up, with that attitude you''ll get yourself killed for sure." Wendy''s response was tinged with the weariness of one who has seen too much, "cHeEr uP, we''re literally going towards a front line of a big world war and you''re telling me to cheer up." Hera, ever the peacemaker, intervened, "Pipe down you two, let''s go to checkup." At the checkup location, the clerk''s request for their names and UOM badges brought a moment of normalcy to the surreal feeling of embarking on such a significant mission. "Name and UOM badge please," the clerk asked in a routine tone that belied the gravity of their journey. Completing the checkup, they received confirmation of their next steps. "All good to go, you''re taking Poseidon, it''s at dock 4. Safe travels and good luck," the clerk informed them, a standard farewell that nonetheless carried the weight of genuine well-wishes. "Thanks, when will the ship be moving out by the way?" Hera inquired, seeking to anchor herself with details. "In about an hour," came the reply, setting the timeline for their imminent departure. Acknowledging the clerk with a simple, "Alright, thanks," they moved towards dock 4, where the Poseidon awaited, its decks already teeming with the lives and stories of those onboard. ... "Well, I''m going to my cabin, I''ll see you guys on the deck in an hour or so when we move out, alright?" Kasper announced, marking a brief parting as they each sought a moment of respite before the journey ahead. "Sure," Wendy and Hera responded in unison, the division of cabins a small reminder of the structured world they were about to leave behind on land. As time slipped quietly by, they found themselves back on deck, the vast expanse of the sea before them, a metaphor for the unknown that lay ahead. Captain John Waverly''s address broke through the murmur of anticipation, his words a mix of warning and humor that belied the seriousness of their mission. "Listen up, soldiers, we''re about to move out, so if you''re prone to getting seasick, hit the bed, if you''re bored, help the ship''s crew, and if you''re annoying, I''ll personally throw you overboard. The trip will take 2 days as usual, that''s all. Any questions?" ... A forest of hands shot up, a testament to the myriad concerns and curiosities of those aboard. Yet, with a dismissive glance, Captain Waverly concluded, "Seems like there are no important questions, well then, have fun aboard my ship." The murmurs that followed, a blend of confusion and disbelief, underscored the surreal nature of their departure. "Alright then, honestly, I''m just going to go to bed, time goes faster that way, what about you guys?" Hera suggested, seeking the solace of sleep in the face of an uncertain future. "I''m kinda hungry, so I''ll go to the cafeteria," Wendy decided, the practical need for sustenance grounding her. "I took a small nap, so I''ll join Wendy to grab some food," Kasper concluded, their paths diverging momentarily as each sought to prepare for the journey in their own way. "Alright, see ya then! I''m off to bed, haha," Hera''s laughter was a brief spark of lightness as they parted ways with a casual, "See ya! Bye!" As the ship began its journey, the we see Captain John Waverly, who, away from the eyes of his crew and passengers, engaged in a covert communication. ... "...everything is ready, infiltration successful..." CHAPTER 11 - A captain goes down with his ship As night stretched its dark veil over the Poseidon, Hera, alone in her cabin designed for four, succumbed to the embrace of sleep. The world around her was silent, save for the gentle creaks and whispers of a ship cutting through the calm Set Ocean. Yet, within the sanctuary of her mind, a storm raged¡ªa vivid nightmare that thrust her onto the front lines of a battle that was all too real in her waking life. In the throes of her dream, Hera stood shoulder to shoulder with Kasper and Wendy, their camaraderie unbreakable even in the face of the Kingdom of Berk''s relentless assault. The forest around them¡ªa dense battlefield¡ªechoed with the sounds of war as a spear-like bullet sliced through the air towards them. Together, they dodged, but the respite was fleeting. Wendy and Kasper were caught off guard, ambushed, and brought to their knees by the enemy. Their calls for Hera, desperate and fear-laden, pierced the night, "Hera! Heraaaa!!! Heraaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Abruptly, the nightmare shattered, replaced by a reality equally as jarring. The urgent pounding and shouting at her door dragged Hera from one nightmare into another. Wendy and Kasper''s voices, now real and fraught with urgency, mirrored the desperation of her dream, "HERAAAAAA!!! HERRRAAAAAAAAAAA!! OPEN UP QUICKLY HERAAAAA!!" Stumbling out of bed, Hera''s senses immediately registered that something was amiss¡ªthe ship tilted dangerously to the right. "What the hell is going on!!??" she demanded, her voice a mix of confusion and rising panic. "The ship is sinking!!! We gotta move!" Kasper''s declaration cut through the fog of sleep that still clung to Hera. "WHATT!!?? HOWW!?" Hera''s disbelief was palpable. "We don''t know! There was an explosion on the lower decks and water started pouring in fast! We got no time to lose; we need an emergency raft!" Wendy''s words were a call to action, leaving no room for hesitation. As they hurried towards the emergency rafts, Hera''s steps faltered. An instinct, honed by years of training and combat, screamed that something was amiss. "Why are you stopping, Hera?!" Wendy''s concern was evident in her voice, mirrored by Kasper''s puzzled, "Hera..?!" Hera''s voice was steady, her resolve clear. "Something doesn''t add up. The Set Ocean is the calmest one of the four oceans! The ship exploding because of natural causes is hard to believe!" With a determined glance at her companions, she made a decision. "I''m going to check something! Please go get us an emergency raft ready! Kasper, here, take my bag." Kasper, caught off guard, could only shout after her retreating figure, "HEY HERA-.." His voice trailed off, a mix of worry and confusion in his tone. Wendy''s plea, "PLEASE RETURN FAST HERA," echoed his sentiment, her voice laced with urgency as they hurried towards the emergency rafts, leaving Hera to her solitary mission. Navigating the tilting corridors with a blend of haste and precision, Hera reached the second floor, where the captain''s cockpit and the communication systems were located. She found herself before a door that refused entry, her knocks unanswered. Fueled by desperation, she shouted, "Heyyy!! Anyone there!!! Open up fast!!!" Receiving no response, Hera took matters into her own hands, forcibly breaking through the door to uncover the truth lurking within. The cockpit was eerily deserted, a silence that belied the chaos unfolding outside. It was then that she felt it¡ªthe menacing presence of someone behind her. Reacting just in time, Hera dodged a treacherous blow from Captain John Waverly, the very man who should have been their safeguard. "HEY! WHAT''S THE MEANING OF THIS CAPTAIN??!!" Hera demanded, her voice a mix of betrayal and disbelief. Love this story? Find the genuine version on the author''s preferred platform and support their work! Breathless, the captain retorted, "That''s, huff, huff, what I WANT TO KNOW AS WELL!!!" His defense was feeble, his confusion apparent. "You were the one who tried to attack me, without warning! What is going on with the ship!" Hera pressed, her determination to uncover the truth unwavering. Their confrontation was abruptly interrupted by a chilling voice from the communication device, a voice that heralded doom. "Hmm, seems you got some friends that will follow you to the grave...Jack! Ha ha ha!" the unknown assailant taunted. The captain''s desperation became palpable as he cried out, "THIS WASN''T PART OF THE DEAL! I DID WHAT YOU ASKED, NOW GET ME OUT OF HERE AND RELEASE MY WIFE AND KIDS!" The mysterious voice''s reply was merciless, devoid of any humanity. "...wife?...kids?...do you know how many we kill daily? They are not here anymore, idiot! HA HA HA HA." Waverly''s anguish was palpable, "Why, would you...lie...only for a small boat..with mostly new inexperienced soldiers!" The unknown voice''s contempt was clear. "...even if I told you...you subhuman monkey won''t understand it..." As the captain''s plea for clarity met with a cold end, "...this talk is...finished...BEEP," Hera witnessed the despair of a man who had lost everything to a deal shrouded in treachery. Faint and defeated, Captain Waverly''s last attempt to reach out fell on deaf ears, his strength leaving him as he collapsed, leaving Hera with more questions than answers. "HEY CAPTAIN! WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE SHIP??!!" she demanded, but it was too late. "...who..cares..we''re dead..anyways..." were his final, resigned words before succumbing to unconsciousness. Time was of the essence. Hera''s frustration at the captain''s failure to act, "Tsk...useless old fart...gotta move fast now!" spurred her into action. As she made her way back, she couldn''t ignore those still trapped. Her journey was marked by heroism as she aided the escape of others, her path a grim reminder of the cost of their perilous journey. Upon reaching the emergency raft station, the relief on Wendy''s face was evident. "HERA! There you are...we were worried, what happened?!" Hera''s findings were grim. "Not sure, but as I expected, it was not a natural cause that caused the explosion, the captain is behind it!" The revelation sent shockwaves through her friends. Kasper''s disbelief was palpable, "What??! Are you sure? You''re totally serious about this!?" "Yes, for now, let''s get out of here fast! The ship will sink any minute, and no idea what else the captain has done to it that still can cause us extra trouble!" Hera urged, her leadership never more crucial. As they set off on their emergency raft, adrift in the Set Ocean, Hera took command, ensuring they kept hope and order amidst uncertainty. "Listen here, everyone! We still have a full day before we make landfall at the West area of the Center. I have sent an SOS before the ship sank, but I don''t know if they received it, I also got a namelist with everyone who should be on board the ship, I will do a roll call! Say yes if your name is on here!" The roll call, a sobering moment, revealed the harsh reality¡ªonly 70 out of 230 souls had survived. The dawn of the next day brought with it a heavy silence, a shared mourning for those lost. As Hera gazed towards the dawning sky, a scene elsewhere unfolded¡ªa room bathed in the morning''s first light, an alarm sounding the beginning of a significant day. Warin''s hand, stretching to silence the alarm, signaled the onset of events yet to unfold, ... ... "...so..today it''s happening..."
