《The Prince Of Stars》 Prologue The Milky Way - an infinite ocean of immortal stars that illuminated space with their sparkling light. But on this very special day, they shone brighter than usual to celebrate in joy and deep magic the great festival of the elves of the Grovius Empire. Visitors from other planets and systems, even from distant galaxies, all looked radiant and eager for the celebration of one of the most fantastic events ever produced there, and even took advantage of this unique opportunity to wear their best attire. An incredible parade of ships crossed the planet''s borders, and circulated freely wherever the eye fell, all accompanied by the hubbub of people happy and excited to participate in such a popular and large-scale phenomenon. It is true that the Grovius Empire was famous for being one of the four largest and most powerful states in the Dorgon galaxy. Emperor Vergal, a handsome, dedicated, exceptionally intelligent, and unusually charismatic person, ruled his world with a firm and formidable, yet incredibly fair hand, which endeared him to all his people. He was particularly attached to the celebration of the elf festival itself, as it gave him, unlike some, the opportunity to spend a little more time with his beloved wife, the sublime Empress Krilia. Thus, everything had to be bright and wonderful. Unfortunately, in spite of his good mood and his enthusiasm for the present and the future, one thing disturbed him dangerously, and this thing was his son, his only child, very brilliant, very talented, very intelligent. Too much perhaps if one accepted to see and probe reality as it was, and with perfect impartiality. A true prodigy capable of unimaginable things. Thus, he could have been the ideal and unquestionable heir that every father and every nation would have dreamed of having, the beloved heir of the entire Grovius empire, if it weren''t for his nature, which was as terrible and complex as his magic. He was totally uncontrollable and unpredictable, a real mystery, cold and strange. And the most worrying thing was that he managed to hide this dark side from the world with a varnish as dazzling as it was deceptive. The imperial couple suffered from this indomitable nature, ignoring all concessions from their beloved child, constantly wondering if, as an only child, they had spoiled him too much, or given him too much freedom, to the point where he was no longer aware of limits, and believed he had the right to do whatever he wanted, not caring for a minute about the consequences. Besides, at the moment when all the people were waiting impatiently for their appearance, their hearts united in the same pleasure, their eyes riveted to the balcony of the blue palace, this son so worrying had still not returned. In fact, they had no idea where he could be since the day before, and just after they had urged him, not to say begged him, to stay at the palace in order to be as ready as possible for the great planetary celebration. The worst thing was that the others, except for his faithful servant Kolez, seemed to be totally unaware of his savagery. It is true that if they did not know him in his intimacy and if they did not have access to his dark and deep thoughts, even they would never have guessed what he was. And it was true that outside, in the sight of people, he always wore with perfection a mask of blinding sublimity and inexpressible fascination, and that in paradox, captivated all the people, entirely, irremediably, inspired to his family a frightening and ineradicable fear. This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report. The imperial couple still remembered the case of one of the noblewomen of a great illustrious family who seemed totally flamboyant and innocent to the world, but who, behind the curtains, sent the children to a reformatory for pure sadism and influence peddling. So their son returned her cruelty by simply doing worse than this elegant and skillful woman with a falsely naive face could ever do, he damaged half of her body, letting others see what she really was - ugliness, and then, what she had become, before bringing her to justice, and all this, in total invisibility. No one, except the imperial family, has ever understood what happened, and probably no one will ever know. And that was probably for the best. But it didn''t end there! No doubt, thought the couple, tortured with doubts, that they should have had the courage and conviction to stop him, at least to reason with him, or better yet to lock him away from all light, before the worst happened. However, because of their infinite, unconditional love for this child that everyone seemed to love so much, they did nothing. And besides, the object of all their thoughts and worries was making his grand entrance into the big meeting room. - Father, Mother, here I am! And you have nothing to worry about, I am already ready to be seen and admired by our beloved people and our countless visitors as diverse and usually lively as you! He had expressed himself with a joy a little too deceptive but quite casual which made his parents shake their heads. - What?" asked the prince, looking at them with an impassive and mysterious air. - Nothing, if we exempt, of course, your delay and your incredible indifference, which undoubtedly pushed you not to speak to us about your outing last night and even less about the place where you had gone, and that, in spite of our begging you not to do it, everything is perfectly fine! Their son smiled, folding his hands as he approached them with natural nonchalance. - Dear Father, I can''t inform you of my every move, especially concerning my private affairs, it would be too embarrassing. - A woman? - Of course, a woman! confirmed the heir with eloquent gestures and a falsely disconcerted expression. - I don''t think there has ever been only one. - And for my part, I don''t see the difference. His mocking, sadistic expression was frightening to see. His mother, the ruler Krilia, bit her lips in despair and responded by standing majestically in front of her son, staring him straight in the eye. - With such vanity, I am not surprised. The prince shrugged his shoulders, unmoved, easily supporting the haunted gaze of his mother. - Why get angry, mother, as long as these girls are ready to go where she wants to go with their own will, although below mine it goes without saying, the problem does not appear. The empress considered her beloved child with conscious eyes. Like his father, he wore a sumptuous imperial costume, bearing on his left side, where the heart was, the coat of arms of their family, with a long royal coat streaked with gold thread. His beautiful ashy black hair combed back revealed his slim face, identical to his father''s, with fascinating features and eyes as clear as crystal, but in which nothing could be read except his love of life and his total certainty that he was not bothered by anything. As a mother, she didn''t really fear him and, as such, he knew he would never hurt her, in any case with premeditation. Besides, the only person who could tame this terrible creature was her husband, but the latter was, despite his fear and torn feelings, so proud of his son''s prodigious talents and beauty that he always ended up forgiving, and even forgetting, all his actions and whims. The empress smiled a disillusioned, but inevitably tender smile. - You are the problem, my love. Feast The beloved frowned for a brief moment. - Me, but why? - I could give you many reasons. But I think, or rather I am sure, that none of them will ever find their way into your consciousness. His mother, the beautiful Empress of Grovius, spoke in a singularly rigid and almost disturbing manner. She wore with exceptional elegance a magnificent long dress draped in ivory and gold chiffon, decorated with various designs enhanced by rare stones and magic, and cinched at the waist with a wide belt, ribbon and beautifully woven lace. White gloves and classic jewelry covered her delicate hands, and a lavish tiara adorning her proud forehead completed the imperial image. And as usual, even though her son respected her, he didn''t care about her advice, which left him totally indifferent and that deep down, he had never really understood the importance. - You''re right, Mom, I probably never will. He admitted with a gesture revealing his total lack of interest and that his mother could hardly bear. In fact," he continued, changing the subject, "I met a wonderful animal in the woods of Jeriok, really perfect. I would like to have him for myself. The emperor, who went to pour himself a drink at the rare white wooden bar set up along one wall, suspended his gesture when he heard this new whim as disturbing as usual. - Are you sure you can raise him alone? - Why would you doubt it? The sovereign shrugged his shoulders, looking at his son with malice. - Because if I remember correctly, you and the animals have never been truly compatible. - What do you think you''re talking about, Father? he insisted with a falsely surprised face that would have convinced anyone. - Oh, but lots of things, if only we could mention the case of that sublime Kartial who was so terrified of your powers that his heart stopped and never started beating again, or that funny Singui who for days never stopped crying terribly to be freed from your yoke, or the blue Dordogne who was so adorable but preferred to jump off that mountain to escape you, despite its great affection for you - terrifying and incomprehensible, so to speak. And not to mention your first pet, that adorable Ritelle, whose fate was never known, but who I can easily guess had a close connection with what you did to her. This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it The prince shook his head, feeling a terrible annoyance begin to invade him in front of this discussion which had for only purpose to moralize him. - But Ritelle loved me too, omitting to speak about all the others. He protested all the same for the form. - Of course, like all those creatures you had possessed, and who are all dead. - They should all die one day anyway! Just like me. - We all know that! But we should have the right to choose our own fate. Even the creatures you don''t seem to be aware of hurting. The two men looked at each other for a moment, then the prince pursed his lips slightly and smiled strangely. - Well, you see, one should rather consider things as they really are, that these creatures were in the end as bad as they were weak, right? To fear me so much and not be able to stand what I am. Upon hearing these terrible words of sincerity, Emperor Grovius could not help but give a surprised laugh. - And the worst thing is that you really believe what you are saying. - Of course, father. As I always say, it would be so much more tiring to try to be something other than what we really are. - Perhaps," his mother interjected vehemently. But if your uncontrollable nature should ever harm our empire, or our family, I will be there to remind you of your words and etch them into your body. Taking no offense to his mother''s harsh words and threat, the young prince bowed only slightly to the woman who had given birth to him before approaching his father and helping himself to a drink, calmly swallowing it, leaning on the polished bar, and then straightening. - Well, my dear parents, as I said when I came in and before we started this most sterile discussion, I am ready. The event of the famous party was as everyone had hoped, wonderful. When the imperial family was announced and came out on the huge balcony erected on a whole facade of the gigantic palace, deafening applause and cheers greeted their appearance, followed by explosions of magical fireworks that lit up the sky and the whole city with sparkling colors and dust. Then swarms of elves of all kinds appeared in an extraordinary brightness emerging from the horizons and flying gracefully everywhere, stopped in front of the imperial couple once, performed a deep bow in perfect coordination and then resumed their sublime dance and offered other deep and colorful entertainment that amazed all present. The prince behaved as his rank demanded of him. No gesture was too much or too little. He showed an expression that clearly showed his approval of the elves'' elaborate and fantastic performances. Again he was perfect, and again people were blinded by his shining, impervious mask. Hunt As the major feast progressed and the people finally became completely absorbed in the celebration and the countless entertainments on offer, the prince quietly disappeared and made his way to the enchanted forest of Jeriok so he could hunt for a while. As he went deeper and deeper into the enchanted realm, extraordinary sparkles appeared everywhere and then a vision of life formed before the heir from which emerged a beast, his own as giant as it was beautiful, his faithful star creature that stood before him and looked at him. - Here, you arrive a little late Yogel. Declared the prince, amused, in sign of welcome. - My apologies your highness. But why are you hunting? - Because I''m hungry. - You always taste the most delicious and delicate dishes that can be prepared, I would like to point out. And that''s every day, not to mention all the elaborate and perfect dishes that have been specially prepared for you, in astronomical quantities, for this great event... - I know," replied the prince, unperturbed as he continued his exploration, followed by his monster. But sometimes I would like to prepare, if I may say so, my own food. - The problem would be the bushmeat you are going to hunt! - Are you afraid I''ll catch too much? A mocking laugh answered this ironic question. - That''s the last thing I would ever think about, your highness. I was only thinking about the quality of the prey you are going to kill. If its flesh is poisoned, you will suffer. A sardonic exclamation followed this statement which ultimately betrayed deep affection and concern. - But you will be there to help me in case of danger, won''t you? replied the prince, turning to his most loyal ally and reaching out to lightly stroke the dazzling fur. So I don''t really see what I''m risking. For once, to demonstrate his absolute confidence in his star creature, the prince neglected to awaken his powers and went exploring the forest with only his body and natural strength, his unyielding beast as his only magic walking beside him. - When you put it that way, Prince, you give the impression that you are the weak master in constant need of the strength and vigilance of his faithful assistant to live. - This is the case, Yeugon! - We know very well that this is not true. But in order to respect the dietary balance, you must and are of course aware of this, accompany the meat with fruits and vegetables. - Yes, I know. But it''s amazing that I almost feel like I''m with my mother when I''m with you. - Hey, you yourself pointed out that my job is to take care of you! So I have to make sure you eat properly, especially in those inappropriate places like an abandoned forest. Added the large creature, looking wryly at the hundred-year-old trees and their flowering buds. - It''s not abandoned at all! protested the prince, frowning slightly. It is even the opposite, it is a very invaded forest. A little too much sometimes for my taste. - For me, they all look alike anyway. As women are for you highness.Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. - That''s what I said to Mom just this morning. - And I can see her reaction now. She may be your mother and empress, but she is above all a woman, your father''s wife. She will never accept such a mark of inferiority. Especially coming from you, her own son. - No doubt, conceded the heir after a few minutes of reflection. - But for you, in spite of all these words and the wound of your sovereign, these women will never remain but similar creatures. - Well, while we''re on the subject... Stop," the prince suddenly said when they reached the edge of a vast meadow. They immediately turned off their aura and moved in absolute silence to see what kind of animals occupied the vast wilderness clearing. They immediately saw morous, kind of animals with bicolored fur, very skilled in moving in busy spaces. - No, they did not. Yeugon refused outright. - Why not? Their flesh is not so bad! But above all, they are clean, and that''s what you want me to eat, right? - Yes, but too inferior. The prince squinted. - If I eat you now, I won''t have to hunt anymore. suggested the prince in a gentle, dangerously calm voice. For you, surely, are a superior creature. - One can see it like that, indeed. conceded the monster, not knowing how to interpret his master''s words. - That''s for sure. But I''ll pass. Hunting alone, I might as well choose a worthy prey! Abandoning the morous, the two friends penetrated further into the enchanted territory. - Tell me, Prince. - Yes? - Are you really not interested in participating in the Elf event? - No, I am not. - Why not? - Why do you want to know so badly? - Because it''s about you. The prince turned to his creature for a moment and exchanged a long look with him, then decided to tell him the truth. - Because during those few hours when people are so happy and distracted by pleasures and amusements, I can take off this hideous and so disturbing mask of prince and heir, and escape. - Escape, that''s what you do all the time! - Yes, but not this way! Today, I can give up my magic for a while without it hurting me. Yeugon Zeneg was about to reply to this remark when his prince suddenly stopped, and he saw that the young heir had his eyes riveted on a deplorable spectacle. Not far from a pile of ochre earth, a whole group of enraged beasts was taking their anger out on one, a round, very hairy creature, of a very dark red color that was even more distinct because of all the blood that was coming out of its wounds. The poor exhausted and beaten beast was already having trouble moving. When he thought that death was going to take over his being, the monsters that were tearing his body suddenly stopped, before being torn to pieces, and whose blood and flesh spread everywhere with an abominable brutality. Then the poor battered beast felt an extraordinary cold force reigning in the whole place, he saw first the huge monster whose beauty and light seemed to resemble the stars, and its power no doubt also similar, a power such as to be able to keep away or even simply to cease all life existing in the forest. But the most dangerous thing was not that, no, the greatest danger was undoubtedly the one who stood next to him and whom he seemed to serve with so much devotion that it was as visible as the stars of the night, a young boy wearing simple, but luxurious clothes, a light brown suit that he wore with incredible casualness, the same casualness that had led him to tear apart its mortal enemies a moment earlier without the slightest mercy or feeling. He had no aura, probably having decided to celestialize it to move without attracting attention, which was the only possible explanation anyway. And his power was reflected in his crystal eyes, and his whole being annihilated any magic that might surround them, unmistakably reflecting his nature and his greatness. He seemed to reign supreme over all that he did, but something seemed to dwell behind that phenomenal strength, something deeper and darker. And just as he was advancing toward the little beast with the adorable, bruised body, which died of fear more than before, he desperately dragged himself to the pile of earth, and took refuge there with all his might, pitifully closing his eyes as he thought of his true end with dread. He let out small moans as tears streamed down his ravaged face, shaking miserably like a dead leaf lost in the violent winds of the storms, and his blood kept gushing out of his soaked fur. But when he saw himself already immobilized, frozen and scattering like the others before him, he only felt a cold but restorative magic take hold of his body and invade him completely. When he found the strength to open his small, round, shining eyes again, he noticed that his body was no longer injured and that the two strange visitors had left. The redheaded creature hesitated for a moment and then went in search of his cold saviors, of this being so beautiful and seemingly devoid of any life, of any pity, having probably saved him only by simple whim and not by empathy. Antagonism - Your Majesty! - Yes, Yeugon! I felt it too! confirmed the prince, an abominable coldness emanating from his body. He looked far away, beyond the horizons, to where the unwanted beings that aroused his rage and hatred were. - How dare these foreigners come to Grovius, unabashedly displaying such atrocious intentions and believe that they will succeed? They will pay for this. Then the prince wore a face so cruel and implacable that even Yeugon was afraid. It took him some time to regain his powers, precious minutes that he wasted for no good reason, allowing the enemies of the empire to move forward with their plan of destruction, but as soon as his magic returned, bubbling up in his body, he flew without further ado over the forest to the battlefield. A gigantic fire engulfed half of Grovius'' massive city and magical black clouds quickly covered the sky, which minutes earlier had been as blue as Emperor Jergal''s party suit. - What''s that?" the prince murmured, staring at the black mass where swarms of flying monsters with gloomy scarlet eyes appeared, spitting out a very powerful magical fire that burned the city and caused many people to scream in agony. These screams tore through Grovius'' space and quickly aroused the prince''s destructive desire to kill. No sooner had he guessed this deadly situation than an army of black, flying monsters, sensing his threatening presence, turned on him, throwing powerful magical blows. Yeugon erected a gigantic spherical barrier around them before launching a huge devastating shot that suddenly eradicated the army. The prince heard terrified screams below him, near the forest, and saw a small family desperately fleeing another army of ferocious beasts, but this time not flying and wearing very thick dark armor. He quickly climbed down and reached out, exerting his power, which quickly changed the ground beneath the monsters'' feet into a huge lake of mud where shapeless giants emerged halfway down to grab the beasts as easily as small wood and take them into their sinister and fatal depths. The prince put his foot on the ground with a ferocious smile. He turned for a moment to his stellar beast with confidence. But what he didn''t see was the swarm of dark monsters lurking in the undergrowth and bushes, sordidly watching the prince and moving with frightening speed and stealth. Then a monster took the offensive and quickly leapt at the prince, but was stopped in its near-death attack by a round creature with dark red fur. The heir immediately turned to see what was happening and saw a monster and a round creature pass before his eyes before rolling away. The red creature landed heavily on the ground while the black beast got up with ease before rushing towards the adorable rescue creature. But as before, the latter saw his mortal enemy immobilized before bursting into a thousand pieces. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. The prince then floated towards his red-haired savior, who crouched fearfully on the ground, terrified of the powerful young warrior, despite what he had done for him and why. He looked at him for a moment with that icy look that horrified him so much, before stroking his head. - You were fantastic, you know. You did something you didn''t need to do. And you did it with courage. I don''t know if you saved my life, but I''ll take it as a given. Thank you. Happy and relieved, the scarlet creature raised its head with a smile, and shyly snuggled up to the prince. The other allies of the monsters appeared from the woods and rushed towards their young ruler, who reached out, creating a huge star shield that quickly grew and crushed everything it touched, living or not. He looked at the fearful creature who nevertheless showed him unbounded confidence. - Stay there, I''ll be back soon. The round creature nodded happily. The prince gave it an arrogant, yet surprisingly tender expression. - Very good boy. As the young healer stood up, he looked up at the cloud where a titanic monster with icy eyes appeared, also wearing thick armor of stellar metal. The heir gave it an icy look that meant nothing but destruction. He also rose into the air and exerted his power, emitting a phenomenal light that stunned everyone. The planet''s army, wearing gray and white armor with the imperial crest, bravely and skillfully fought Grovius'' invading beasts. When the prince finally emerged from his ocean of light, he in turn wore a thick but light, special armor made of star metal and his Yeugon beast became a titan, majestically wearing a blue beard and a royal crown, and whose armor was forged from the same alloy as that of his master, who was now reaching out to their opponent. Then both parties prepared for a gigantic launch of a magic shell. Yeugon spread his flaming wings and formed the shot, the monster in turn wrapped himself in black clouds to gather it and turn it into a phenomenal orbit. And when they finally launched their destructive bombs at the same time, the shock was so violent that they destroyed the remnants of the invading army that Grovius''s guard could not eliminate, while the prince protected by his great magic his people and the city from the devastating waves of this confrontation, which required incredible strength and drained him of his forces. Then always with a cold rage and in spite of a worrying tiredness, the heir intensified again the fire of his beast to push back the invading giant monster and to send it in space before disintegrating it in a formidable explosion which illuminated one moment a whole part of the considerable planet. In front of this resounding victory, all congratulated the heir for his courage and his heroism. But not yet satisfied despite this triumph, the prince suspected the traitors who had dared to sell his beloved empire to foreigners. And whatever the reasons that led them to this treason, he will make them pay in such a way that they will never recover. Juge and Guilty - Yeugon! Take me to them. The latter considered his master, not knowing what to say or do. - You are so cold that I tremble! - And I can guarantee you, Yeugon, that these people will tremble even more horribly than you ever will. He immediately went to the palace of the infidels, the nobles of a very old and very rich princely family who, for some sordid reason, had decided to betray their empire. Moreover they tried to excuse their actions with reasons that unfortunately for them, did not reach their young sovereign. - Listen, Your Highness, we had to do what we did. It wasn''t for the money, no, it was for... But the words died quickly when they realized that in his terrible rage, the prince did not even listen to the reasons of his former subjects. He called upon a part of his power that he rarely used to destroy the people who had become his unforgivable enemies, a darker, more atrocious magic, to punish those who dared to sell out his people for their own interests. - I don''t care why you sold the keys of our empire to those monstrous beings. The fact is that you did and that''s all that matters to me. The princely couple was wonderfully dressed as was required of their rank. A green and gold suit studded with tiny dustings of shiny gems, a rare leather belt with the family crest engraved in gold on the fine fabric, a light taffeta gown studded with pearls and sparkling moving flowers, a magnificent carved tiara adorning the head of the woman with the selfish thoughts. The one who was begging the prince to give them the opportunity to defend themselves. - Please, Your Highness. They left us no choice! - Of course they did. You had the choice to come to us, you had the choice not to give away the codes of our borders. You had a choice in everything. But you chose to take this path. So when you decide on something in your soul and conscience, your duty is to assume the consequences, whatever they are. Then the body of the prince shone and was covered with very strange and bright magical symbols, then a suffocating fog appeared and spread all around the princely estate, then a gigantic black skeleton engraved with the same symbols as that of the heir emerged from the dark fog, with empty and cold eyes it posed on the doomed cowards. The giant monster reached out, grabbed the trembling couple in fear and lifted them up right in front of its eyes, watching them squirm desperately, before smiling horribly and slowly opening its mouth to devour them. Which he did, blood gushing from his mouth as he chewed their broken bodies. If you come across this story on Amazon, it''s taken without permission from the author. Report it. - Mom, dad? Where are you? - We''re home! Three children appeared at the door and hesitantly entered the large room where the tragic execution took place, looking for their parents. The scene was not lacking in irony, thought the ruler, without mercy. They were three beautiful children of about twelve, ten and seven years of age, worthy of their noble lineage. And when they saw the prince, they were surprised before bowing in deep reverence. - Your Highness, please excuse us for entering without warning, but we were looking for our parents. - I can see that. And you don''t have to apologize, because this is your home. The children tried to be comfortable in the stranger''s presence, but despite their efforts and the rather courteous manner of the Grovius heir, something deeply disturbed them in the rigidity and coldness of their host, not to mention the magical black mist that covered their house and all its surroundings. - Did you produce this suffocating mist? asked the eldest one. - Yes, but it was just an exercise. I''ll make it disappear immediately," he added softly, raising his hand, then glowing before using his power to dispel the mist. - That was terrifying," the other cadet exclaimed in a shaky voice, snuggling up to his older brother. - Yes, and I don''t understand why you did it. Where are our parents? The elder continued with frightening virulence, guessing but not daring to go further as to what had driven his sovereign to use such terrifying magic. But the prince looked at them for a moment without answering before opening his mouth. - Children, tell me, have your parents spoken to you recently about black monsters? - Black monsters?" the trio exclaimed in chorus, not understanding. - Yes, monsters that they met and that gave them a lot of money. - No," replied the second, "but I heard them say that thanks to people in high places, they will become even stronger and more powerful and will reign as kings! - Shut up, you silly girl," the eldest apostrophized her, covering his younger sister''s mouth, understanding that these few specific facts should be kept from the heir to the throne. - Perhaps it is something important and very secret that should not be revealed to others. - But it is the prince!" replied his younger sister, not understanding anything, and offended by the harshness of his older brother. - That''s the point, he shouldn''t... Then, realizing what he was saying and confirming it, the eldest stopped abruptly. - I see. This was the only comment the prince made when he heard the truth from the children. - Where are our parents?" the eldest asked again violently, but unfortunately beginning to recognize the terrible reality. - They left. At this clear and frightening news, the boy lost his voice for a moment before he could continue. - What does this mean? - It means that they are never coming back. - Never... You killed them, didn''t you? - As you guessed, in that black mist that frightened you so much. The child stepped back, hugging his younger siblings. - But why? Why? - You know very well. Your brothers and sisters don''t understand reality yet. You, on the other hand, are well aware of it. They had to be punished for their crime of selling the empire to monsters, and I did it. - But why kill them? - Because they themselves killed many people. The guards soon invaded the traitors'' palace, then took the children and took care of everything. Unforgivable The imperial rulers of Grovius immediately summoned the prince to the throne room. The latter had no idea of the reason of this convocation, or rather, expected something else opposite to what would happen. His parents, seated upright, like supreme judges, were waiting for him with a terrible calm. - Father, mother, here I am! - Yes, here you are at last, after having taken your revenge on the traitors. - Of course I did. The prince nonchalantly assumed as a matter of course, deliberately ignoring the abnormal coldness of his parents. - It was not your duty to do so, and certainly not to kill them. - Obviously, I decided it was mine. They betrayed the empire, they had to be eradicated. I took care of it. But please, no need to thank me, for the pleasure was all mine. He concluded with a mocking smile. The emperor bit his lips before continuing his oaths. - Your status as heir did not give you the right to do this. You have gone far beyond the bounds of your office. You are as much under the law as anyone else. - After what happened today, I don''t care about the law," replied the young nobleman, his face cruel, making large eloquent gestures, "and more than anything else about those bands of larvae who thought they had the right to sell our empire for equally absurd reasons. - Love is never absurd, my son, said the Empress painfully. - What do you mean? - They only wanted to protect their children. - Protect their children and kill you, not to mention all those who perished in this brief but violent invasion. The expelled imperial family, and that''s us, I point out to you, pointing at all three of them eloquently, they would easily seize the throne, it''s as simple as that. You should have thanked me for ridding the people of this species that pollutes our imperial court. - They had the right to go to trial like any guilty person who has ever been convicted in our empire, and especially the right to a fair trial. But of course, this kind of thing is completely out of your hands, nothing civil can be understood by the heir to the throne. Or rather the former heir to the throne. The prince frowned, becoming even colder than usual, and asked in a terribly calm voice. - What exactly do you mean? - I think you already understood exactly what we mean, that you have been stripped of your imperial title and duties. Now you are just another commoner. - What? exclaimed the prince, dumbfounded and confused, not understanding that he was punished for something he thought he had every right to do.If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. But his parents, though tense and heartbroken, continued to raise their haughty bearing with defiance and intransigence. - You have heard well, and this decree applies from this moment! - But why? Why?" he asked. he required, unable to believe the definitive words of the rulers. For having exterminated traitors, I am treated as such! You want to punish me for destroying the enemies of our Nation! - Yes. You have done too much. It is time for you to stop your misdeeds and face the consequences. Concluded the emperor, his father, whom neither of them recognized as he was so cold but also abominably cracked. - I can''t believe it. The prince spat with eloquent gestures. You prefer monsters to your own child who did not stint to save the empire. - You attacked the eldest child. - Of course I attacked him, after he did it first, brandishing that knife and rushing at me like a madman. - You had coldly and thoughtlessly informed him of his parents'' death, calmly adding that it was your doing. His mother screamed almost hysterically. How did you think he would react? How do you think you would react if you were in his shoes? The doomed young nobleman clenched his fists in rage. - My parents are not sleazy infidels! So the question should never arise. - He was only a child! the Empress continued, crying out in despair. Do you have any idea what a child is, what it means to be a child? She shook her head. - Because of you, that boy has lost his powers forever. And worse, his parents. The prince looked at his mother for a moment and felt the horrible pain that was eating away at her, then shrugged. - And it doesn''t affect me at all. - Although it grieves me immensely, I am perfectly aware of it. The prince straightened up and exclaimed with arrogance, but also tinged with rage. - I have seen people suffer and die today, innocent parents and children, precisely because of the parents of this child. For whatever reason they did what they did, they did it. And I have righted that wrong, in the best way I thought I should. And if the child of those monsters was going to be hurt and suffer irreparable consequences because of that punishment, well, let him be, and he was. But for my part, I have no regrets. - You''ve gone too far, darling. exclaimed the emperor with conviction. The former heir looked intently at his beloved parents before closing his eyes and shaking his head, cynically... - And I say that you have only found an opportunity to punish me for what I have done since the beginning and for what I am. I understand that you have finally found the sufficient and longed-for excuse to condemn me. The emperor pursed his lips for a moment before nodding. - You are right. We have finally found an official reason to enforce your sentence. - And if it wasn''t the murder of those filthy nobles, it would have been something else. - No doubt about it. - I see. At least you didn''t have had the hypocrisy to deny it yet. The prince looked at them again intensely before straightening up even more. - So be it. The imperial couple stood up. They had not skimped on the forms to make clear to anyone, to the whole empire and first and foremost to their beloved child the irrevocability and finality of their decision, by changing their finery and wearing a sumptuous black and gold suit with no other meaning than the formal proof of their choice and their unwavering will to submit to it at all costs. - Former heir of Grovius, you are condemned to lose your title of prince, your noble status and your phenomenal magical powers. You are required to leave Grovius the moment your magic is removed from your body and never return. The imperial couple held hands and walked toward their only child. Emperor Jergal was silent for a moment, then reached out to touch his son''s face. - One day I know you will understand this choice. But the chastened son only gave him an irrevocable smile. - No, I won''t. His parents looked at him for a long time before kissing him. - You do it because it has to be that way, in the end Then a powerful magical light burst forth, spreading throughout the palace, and even the surrounding area, and took away the banished prince''s magical powers. - I love you, Vezius. Forever. Avine "It was always told that our vast universe, filled with stars and planets by the billions, was also inhabited by fantastic and legendary beings called star warriors," singular beings equally capable of the best and the worst. Their deep, rich and heartbreaking history, known to all, was so fascinating that even though it was almost impossible to do so, I wished to meet at least one of them in my life. These beings so sublime and powerful, whose magic was envied and sometimes even exploited by many people as ambitious as they were devoid of conscience, not to mention that some of them, those great warriors, also used their own powers to submit others to their domination. And when my wish was finally granted, and I was able to get close to one of them, it only took me a moment to guess that he belonged to the second category, the dominant one, and in my opinion, the worst of all. And yet, to my great misfortune, I couldn''t help loving him. And even though I was fully aware of the inexpressible price to pay for being able to be with him and live his passion, I was willing to pay it with all my soul." "It all started one night, when I was lost and trapped in a squalid place floating in space, hidden in darkness. I reached during those excruciating moments the deepest despair, ready to give up. And then he appeared as only he could. It was a strange and brief encounter, but without question a wonderful, unique moment, inscribed in the stars illuminating all the galaxies. If I had to do it all over again, I know I would make the same choices, with all the consequences and suffering that would entail, so as not to miss a single second of these irreplaceable moments. With my heart in tatters for once believing he was definitely an invincible and unshakable hero, time has revealed to me that he was also a lonely young man damaged by the burden of his blood and magic." *** The tall, sublime girl was about seventeen years old and had splendid blue eyes. She had a slim and slender body, and was adorned with a long and beautiful hair which, at that moment, was colored with an indigo tint sown with white and glittering strands emitting with each movement a dust of bright light. The beautiful teenage girl called Avine was sitting at a table on a terrace of a chic restaurant and was looking through a huge bay window at the modern city which was spreading in a joyful and insulting hubbub, but whose echo was fortunately blocked by a magical barrier, because she would not have had the strength to bear such a deafening noise as her boredom was already great. - Darling, are you listening to me? The sulky darling turned towards her interlocutor, a tall blond young man with green eyes, handsome and vain, who looked at her with a fat smile and a desire which displeased her instead of being flattering. The girl made a nod of affirmative in answer to the question of her companion. This one, visibly satisfied, looked at all at leisure the body of his friend, by starting with his face with the perfect oval and the complexion of porcelain, whose silky hair carried a lace cap. Then her fragile neck, her delicate chest, moulded in a dress of brown velvet and strewn with small pieces of crystals. Finally, her fine arms and her delicate hands with the fingers decorated with false nails, of which one supported her head with the more and more bored expression, of which alas her companion did not notice or more probably made pretence not to do it.This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it. - You are really beautiful my love. The boy complimented her, untiringly. - Thank you Pross. Answered the beautiful girl, imperturbable. I listened to you, you know. But could you repeat your last question? - Of course, sweetheart, what I wouldn''t do for you? Avine rolled her eyes as she once again heard his sweet and artificial words. - Would you like us to celebrate your eighteenth birthday together at the festival of lights? The girl stood up and, with a delicate gesture, stroked her silver hair. Then, leaning on the back of her old-fashioned seat covered with a garnet velvet with floral patterns, she slowly shook her head. - Why at this party precisely? - Because my father is one of the organizers. He explained as an obviousness and with this sufficiency which began seriously to annoy his interlocutor. He has a big share in this company. - I see. - And if you agree, he added while behaving as if the girl had already given her consent, I will take care to offer you moments out of the common. And he ended his long diatribe with a carnivorous smile not very reassuring, revealing more than any word what he expected from her as a reward for all his efforts. Although strangely disgusted, Avine could not help but laugh. - Pross, really! You always know what to make up to get your way. And besides, it seems that you would never be stifled by modesty. Looking at her with astonishment, he shrugged his shoulders. - I don''t even understand the meaning of that word. Father says all the time that this kind of emotion or character is for the weak. Winners have the right and duty to always show off and take pride in their rank and wealth. Thinking back to Pross'' father, rich and cold, Avine did not doubt it for a moment. And his son had undoubtedly inherited from him, in addition to his handsome face, beautiful blond hair and gray eyes, his horrible paternal flaws: vanity, greed, superiority complex, deviousness, and many other sordid things. With her eyes lit up with irony, Avine looked at the young man''s sumptuous suit, dark green, streaked with shiny black threads, and obviously custom-made, so she couldn''t help but maliciously suggest some naughty possibilities. - Pross, I have a particular desire for some time now. She began with a falsely anodyne air. - Really? Inquired this one, already ready to exaucer the least of the desires of his friend in order to assure at best his interests. - Yes. She put innocently the finger on her succulent mouth, pretending to think. - I was thinking of doing something more free and unconventional. - Oh? More than having fun with me at the festival? I highly doubt it. replied the handsome heir pretentiously. - I didn''t want to offend you, although she had every intention of doing the opposite. For the moment, that''s all I''m interested in. - And what is that? - Participating in one of those mud competitions that commoners are so fond of. With you, of course," she concluded with certainty. - What? Pointless The fork he was holding in his hand suddenly dropped and fell on the marble floor with a thud, showing a totally shocked face. Avine noted with satisfaction that she had succeeded in totally shocking her...friend. Because as everyone knows, the mud competition, a very popular and highly sponsored game, consisted of a frantic race between competitors, in groups of eight, where they had to cross, on all fours and without magic, lanes of a few kilometers long, the hardest part of which was to overcome, on the way to victory, very tiring obstacles, such as dodging sharp arrows, avoiding falling into gaping holes, or even pushing with their body shapeless masses, and all this in a limited time, but especially with the whole lower body from the waist down, immersed in the mud, hence its name. So, despite their natural strength, few participants had ever made it to the end. Avine''s mother, who had once taken her to watch this show, remembered having a good time. Which clearly was not the case for Pross. For to imagine the latter, and especially his worthy mother, sneaking into common events especially as noisy and joyful as the mud competition, were as inconceivable as ridiculous. Then shaking his head, the latter picked up the object, laughing, convincing himself that his beautiful princess was only making fun of him. - Forgive me, my darling, because my gesture was a little too cavalier in front of your words although they did not mean anything other than a joke. Because it was a joke, wasn''t it? - Of course it was... The young man was already smiling, sure of his answer. - ..not! - What? You''re laughing at me. exclaimed Pross, standing up slightly. The disappointment on his face was laughable. But seeing the dramatically serious face of his companion, the young man had to realize that she meant what she said. - But what does it take to want things that are not normal and so... dirty? he asked, not understanding anything. - Speak for yourself, Pross. I find that doing common things is very tempting while the usual things like parties or lavish parties start to get really annoying and tiresome. - But boring or not, it shouldn''t bother people like us, right? Counter-attacked Pross, cautiously observing the girl. - Ah, and what are we exactly? - Superior beings, of course? Avine waved his hand. - Why ask again what I already know. She declared more for herself than for her friend. - Exactly. Fortified the blond heir not understanding the irony. He shook his head in disgust. - If Mother had heard that. Just thinking about it would break her spirit. - Would it? Avine inquired mischievously. - Of course it would! But the young boy stopped short. Seeing his friend''s face as she spoke frankly about her mother''s character, Pross knew that he had made a mistake and that he had to make up for it somehow to get his way. He took Avine''s hands and squeezed them hard, his face condescending. If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it''s taken without the author''s consent. Report it. - But if you insist, Mom could make an exception for you and prepare a huge magic mud pool, where we could, for a short time, out of sight of others, have fun without staining or spoiling anything. So, that was the maximum he could agree to, thought the young magician, ironic and a little weary. - I have no doubt about it Pross. The latter, proud of his solution, thought he had won Avine over. But she decided that after that day, she would not see the young man again. Pross asked for the bill. Then they left the restaurant, Avine scorning his friend''s arm. The latter, thinking of another whim, had not really formalized. The ma?tre d''h?tel personally escorted them to the exit as he had done at their entrance to Pross'' personal table. - I hope you enjoyed the meal, Miss, sir. - Yes, as usual Hirok, Pross replied indifferently. Avine did not deign to answer. Such obsequiousness began to seriously revolt her. Outside, a line of ships lined up in front of the establishment. One of them, very luxurious and of an ostentatious aspect which was not at all of her taste, parked at a very enviable place, was ready to leave, the driver got out besides at the approach of the couple, and opened the back door for his young master. This one turned to Avine and ordered. - Okay, get in, I''ll take you home. - No," the latter answered immediately, revolted. I''ll take a free Terwak. - What? - A Terwak, I said. Pross was astonished. - A Terwak? But that''s the means of transportation for commoners? - And I am one. - Not with such a mother. - She is one too. - But she is famous. - A matter of perspective probably. - Without a doubt. Besides, which reminds me, my mom is inviting her for a business lunch on Sunday. - I doubt she''ll come. - It was just a formality. My mother is very busy. - So is mine. - You could say that indeed, Pross nodded indifferently, and visibly relieved that this lunch or whatever it''s called didn''t end up happening. - So, I''ll leave you in the back of your race car. He considered his ship, a roguish smile on his lips, and pointed to it. - It''s beautiful, isn''t it? - Yes, I''ll give you that, even if its color isn''t to everyone''s taste. It''s very nice of you to have invited me to lunch and to have offered me a lift. But I''m still surprised that you took the trouble to get a driver. - Mom put him at my disposal. Answered the young man by shrugging his shoulders, but proud to be so spoiled by his genitress and to expose it. She does not like that I drive myself, and me either after all. Although I am a wonderful driver. Besides, I have noticed that this way of doing things gives more importance. - And not only that. Avine concluded ironically. - What did you say? Pross asked, not having heard the sentence, too busy contemplating his beautiful ship. - I said that to end this discussion, I answer you at once that I will not go to the festival of lights with you nor to the imaginary pool of magic mud that your mother would have especially prepared for me, nor to any other future event. Pross was surprised again. - Why? - Because you are what you are. And I am what I am. she replied simply. She stretched her soft cheek to her stunned former friend who kissed her without realizing that it was a farewell gesture. Then, after a last look, she left. A friendship had just ended forever. - Shall I call you? Raising her eyes to the sky, dotted with mother ships, artificial islands and countless constellations, Avine couldn''t help but turn around to look at him, stunned in turn that he still didn''t understand that their story, if it had ever been one, had just ended completely and definitively. And she saw him staring at her for a long time with an expression so awful that she shuddered before slowly rushing into her car. Then when he disappeared, caught in the waves of other ships that passed and re-passed in the great city, Avine sighed with relief, for she finally realized that her friend, despite his environment and his mind, was not as stupid or blind as she thought. Then raising her hand, she created a light board and pressed a few keys. A bright green dot told her that her action had been successfully executed. After that, the immaterial picture dissipated. Avine had just erased everything about Pross, his e-mails, his contact information, every concrete link between him and her. Absolutely everything. Then, moving forward a little, she raised her arm to activate the bracelet on her wrist, and a small wearer appeared. A device with metal edges. She climbed on it gracefully. The smooth surface on which she placed her feet was as purple as her long hair and the dark suede shoes she wore with class. The Terwak floated for a moment, inching toward the line of traffic before swooping in and flying home. A simple life At a large intersection, Avine stopped and saw a huge creature with a body covered in glistening bistre fur and a paunchy head covered by a mane of multicolored feathers, pass slowly by as if it owned the place. At one point, he turned to the girl and, with a glowing bronze gaze, gave her a hoarse cry. Stepping back for a moment in surprise, Avine hesitantly reached out to the big beast and it sniffed her hand before giving her a gentle pat. - Mom would have loved you. she said with emotion. It was a touching moment of connection, but angry horns sounded all around them and brought them back to reality. Avine looked around and saw faces that showed a variety of expressions, kindness, impatience, frustration, indifference, but the one of anger prevailed over all others. - Excuse me," she said in a magical, almighty voice, so that everyone could hear over the din. Then she gave a slight wave of tenderness to the creature who was already walking away and left in her turn. On her way, she met her best friend, always so joyful and stubborn. - Hello my beauty, she greeted Avine in her way always direct and without artifice. - Hello Mellira, how are you? - Good. But I asked you the first question. - Really? Avine noted, already guessing what it meant. - Yes, because I heard you had lunch with the handsome Keijun heir. Of course, her Melly wouldn''t even bother to start with a small talk. Avine rolled her eyes again, wearily. - Yes. And it''s the event of the year, I suppose. - Of course it is. Because it''s about you and the rich heir after all. I just told you. It''s all anyone ever talks about. Avine shrugged, trying to answer as casually as possible, relegating to a forgotten corner of her memory the crazy look on her former friend''s face. - There''s nothing to say. - Let me laugh. Melly retorted immediately, who knew the young magician by heart. There must be a reason for this invitation. Avine made an eloquent gesture that immediately betrayed her. - Spit it out. insisted her friend, taking her by the shoulders. Avine pouted before speaking, resigned. - He asked me if I wanted to go to the festival with him. - Wow! was immediately the reaction of the vintage lover. - That''s not all. He told me that if I agreed, and by saying so he was acting like he really didn''t need my consent, he would throw a big party especially for me. Something surprising, original and unforgettable. - So, it seems that he uses the big means to conquer you. - That''s really the word that comes to my mind when I saw his anticipatory revulsing expression. Besides," she continued, deciding to empty her bag, "he was counting on the thank-you gift that I had to "offer" him in exchange for his treats. - I see. - Oh, please, normally an aristocrat would never do anything to please our "kind." But because mom is who she is. Of course, he''ll make an exception for his daughter. Grace''s daughter.Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more. - So what?" exclaimed Mellira volubly. You''re lucky. - Oh, you think so? Just the opposite. - Speaking of your mother. How is she doing? - She''s fine. Maybe even a little too well. She has a conference in a few days, and she is quite happy, with a capital H, I can assure you. Because after much deliberation, the law that allowed a company to enter the Kolod forest to get ordinary, unprotected plants has finally been abolished. - This will not please some important people like the family of your aristocrat Pross. The young friend wisely professed with a grimace, guessing without difficulty the face twisted with hatred and frustration of Keijun father. - He is not my aristocrat Pross Mellira," Avine protested disdainfully, having shared with her friend this brief and aberrant vision of the twisted face. And I don''t care about their business and how they feel, as long as they don''t affect my mother. - Oh, you''re hot, hot hot my beautiful. I can even see veils of flame emanating from your delicate body and burning you whole before spreading their heat all around. - And for your part Mellira, you are well aware that your wonderful mother never liked such things as your beast here and ... your clothes. - Oh, who are you telling? The latter agreed with a huge burst of laughter. They looked at Mellira''s beast, a huge artificial creation, a sulky silver-gray metal body, and a flaming white mane, which depended on an anti-gravitational core and delta thrusters to function. - But at least it goes well with my dress of the day. - All your outfits are like that Mellira. Her friend, who was naturally as redheaded as Avine was blond, had dyed her mane that day with an ashy white color. Her silver-gray dress with black metallic button, took volume at the hip thanks to luminescent scales. Her wrists and ankles had heavy carmine gold rings engraved with various modern symbols. So she was very attractive and invigorating. But Mellira was always like that. Not to mention her loyalty, integrity, and laughter. And she was an irreplaceable friend to Avine. Mellira then accompanied her purple-haired friend back to the house. - Tell me right now, my beauty, what you would decide for your big day. Avine was silent for a moment before she shook off her long, shiny hair. - I''ll see. But if I don''t come up with an idea by then, I''ll end up asking Pross''s mother for advice," she concluded, deadpan. - And she will curse you for the rest of her life. - She already does that, Melly. Corrected Avine, her pretty face tightened of a bad grimace. Otherwise, I wouldn''t be so lost in my decision about my birthday party. - I feel for you. - Oh, I sympathize even more. Avine''s friend dropped her off on the terrace of a huge blue glass villa. They kissed, and then Mellira flew away quickly as Avine entered through a precious wooden door, darkly carved with the names of famous creatures from Kolod, their beloved planet. - Mom, I''m home! she shouted happily. It was a large building made of bluish glass, dark precious wood and discreet metal, skilfully interwoven so as not to reflect a vision of heaviness or showy lavishness. The hall was a huge space of sand-colored marbled covered with a thick colored carpet, the chairs were cotton, the woodwork on the walls and the heavy silk curtains softened the impersonal effects of the glass. - Mom, are you there?" she called as she entered the great hall of her home. But instead of seeing her mother Grace, another woman appeared in the corner of the hall. She was tall and rather round, her long raven black hair still held in a perfect bun above her head, clearing the roundness of her dull face lit by brown eyes, where a mischievous but benevolent light danced perpetually. She was wearing her work costume, a dark long-sleeved dress, with a small bouquet of flowers tied to her chest, and a pink apron, her so-called favorite color. - Ah, it''s you Miss Avine, you come back early. Added she maliciously by making clear that she was also aware of the famous appointment. Avine sketched a false smile. - Thank you Douniel, I see that I can always count on you for the grotesque allusions. - I''m only the housekeeper, I won''t allow myself. Declared the brave woman, falsely humble. But knowing the reputation of the young Pross heir, I thought accordingly that you and he... Avine shook her head, annoyed. - Again. Don''t you understand that some thoughts are dangerous and better left in the putrid depths of Tarime (a planet famous for these bottomless marecage), Douniel? And now, where is mom? - Your beautiful mother just went out a few minutes ago. But if you''re still... hungry, I''ve prepared a salad and couscous. I even made a special dessert, a merlot ice cream, your favorite flavor, just in case your lunch didn''t work out. She could not help but add sketching a mimic of the most naughty, and that enraged the young mistress of the house. Clenching her fists, Avine refused the meal and continued. - Tell me already why we keep you at our service Douniel? - Because you, and she meant Avine, are not very "good" at cleaning, no doubt. And I just finished your room. - It''s very good. Well, if you don''t mind, I''ll go out again. - Right now? - ''Yes,'' she said mockingly, already walking to the door. I''m going to Uncle Dobert''s house. He''s probably there. - Of course, since he never goes out, always immersed in his books and his imaginary world. said the housekeeper, raising her arms to the sky, almost scornfully. I''ll probably never understand that kind of person. - For my part, that''s why I''m so fond of him. And with that last dig, Avine ran off. The whole house loved Douniel. Her professionalism was almost as great as that of Avine''s mother - Grace. But her sharp tongue and crude ways, though generally appreciated, were sometimes disturbing. As was the case that day. The secret Outside, Avine took up his Terwak again, although it was not necessary since his mother''s friend lived two blocks away from them. He lived in an old-looking building and surrounded himself with thousands of books, his only real passion. As their precious Douniel mentioned so well. Standing in front of a large metal door engraved, as his uncle told her, with ancient symbols that reflected power, Avine knocked and the door, which recognizing her fingerprints, opened easily. Avine''s uncle also had a butler who, to Avine''s surprise, seemed to have been waiting for her to come. He certainly always greeted her with deference and accompanied her into the hall, a luxurious room, but rather cluttered with antique furniture, heavy curtains hanging from high windows, wallpapers showing gloomy landscapes, not to mention the imposing chandelier-like vessel. - Hello Miss Avine. What a nice surprise. Declared the faithful butler in sign of welcome. Avine answered him by a radiant smile but did not understand this certain feverishness which made tremble the faithful servant. - Hello Brok, thank you for your welcome. I''m happy to visit my dear...uncle." she said with a face that revealed what she thought of his strange behavior. Where is he now? - But as always, in the house, the attentive butler answered simply - Yes, I know, she said, rolling her eyes. But where exactly? - This time... on the first floor, miss. And his already tormented expression changed completely, which strangely alerted the young guest. Avine felt a slight surprise. - Is that so? - Yes, miss. - Curious, I didn''t know he had one. - I didn''t know either, Miss. And I admit I''m a little worried. - Why is that? Avine asked as she approached the faithful Brok, becoming as anxious as he was. - Well, ... - Yes, please speak freely Master Brok, insisted calmly the young guest, maybe I could do something. The latter sighed. - Very well. Your uncle has been acting strangely for the past few days. I was obviously concerned, but at first I tried to stay out of it. But as he became more and more strange, stranger than usual, believe me, I finally asked him what was bothering him, and he looked at me for a long time before answering that some things were simply painful and unavoidable, and that they should therefore be kept silent forever. Then the day before yesterday, when he left his breakfast untouched... As you know, my breakfast is always good and very nourishing. I have never broken my rules and... - I know, Master Brok. Avine soothed him by placing her thin hand on the unfortunate butler''s arm. Your meals are always sublime. And my uncle knows it too. If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. - Yes, you''re right, Miss Avine. He breathed, trying to pull himself together. - As I said, without even touching his breakfast, the master left down the long corridor. I followed him hesitantly of course," he defended himself again, "and this time guiltily, to make sure he was going to rest. It was then that I saw him stand in front of a rather secluded wall in the back of the house, stand there motionless for a moment contemplating it, then put his hands on it and opened a magical door. But not with simple magic. Powerful, silent magic, the reason why none of us have ever discovered it. Listening carefully to these words, Avine''s eyes widened, not believing his ears. Her Uncle Dobert, always so kind and thoughtful, was neglecting his meal and was so tormented by something that he left his faithful servant in such sad anxiety, only to go and open a secret door that Brok said he had kept hidden, which she would never have thought of him. - I see. - Then you might possibly understand, Miss, that I don''t know what to do anymore. - Yes, I can easily understand that, Master Bork. Assured Avine, still not knowing what to think of the situation. But don''t worry too much. she added, trying to be reassuring. I''ll go see him. Maybe it''s just a little depression after all. I''ve heard that everyone has to go through it. - I hope so, miss. sighed poor Brok, who felt lost for the first time. He accompanied her to the back of the house, where, in the middle of a large white wall, a huge double door was open, around which were inscribed ancient letters including a particularly attractive symbol. It was a semicircle on which a young warrior in armor was kneeling majestically, wearing a sublime crown and holding a bow, ready to shoot an arrow. A huge winged beast behind him supported him and served him probably as faithfully as one can dream. - I wonder what that really means," she wondered, watching the sign intently. Then Avine entered the secret room that seemed to hide an infinitely heavy secret for her beloved uncle. A huge gallery greeted her and further on, a huge granite staircase with a beautifully carved banister that led to a huge room filled with shelves of old books by the thousands, luxurious armchairs, but of the old type, in a corner a varnished wooden bar, supplied with all unimaginable drinks. Then she saw her uncle, a man of the same age as Grace, wearing as usual a luxurious and discreet suit, with a scarf tied around his neck and golden cufflinks on his wrists. And for the first time, Avine regarded this being, whom she had called and regarded as a parent for as long as she could remember, with objective attention. Her mother had met him when Avine was only six years old, Grace was seeking funds for her campaign against the excessive exploitation of an opaline lake by unscrupulous industrialists, thus destroying the solid balance of the reproductive cycle of the aquatic beasts. Then Uncle Dobert, also concerned about the environment of the planet, admiring the courage and intelligence of young Grace and asserting himself rich noble, participated in the financing of the campaign. It was at this time that Avine''s mother gained a friend whose support never failed. And even, and Avine was broad-minded enough, understood the more than tender relationship that bound them at one time. She didn''t blame her mother for the affair, which she never really tried to hide. She loved her father, but her mother also had the right to live her life as she saw fit. And now Avine was in a strange room, looking at her uncle who was revealing another face they had always ignored, wondering if, despite all the moments they had spent together, they had ever really known him. He was sitting in a large armchair, legs crossed, one hand resting on his arm and lightly supporting his head covered with a long ashen hair totally disheveled, his face thinned, wearing a distant and melancholic expression. He was contemplating what occupied an entire wall. A moving painting of a young warrior in shining armor, accompanied by a winged beast, fighting together a gigantic black monster with bright scarlet eyes. Avine gazed intently at what seemed to fascinate his mother''s friend so much. The young fighter''s powers were obviously extraordinary and seemingly limitless. Then, feeling strangely disturbed by this unknown and rather incomprehensible vision, spoke. - My uncle? Pain But no answer. - My uncle? Avine insisted gently, but firmly. Then the latter finally deigned to move slightly, but his eyes were still fixed on the intense drawing. - I heard you. I felt your footprints, my dear. - Ah," exclaimed Avine, laughing weakly. At least you still recognize people. I was really afraid that if you stayed in this strange room, you wouldn''t be able to. Not to mention the unfortunate Brok who has been tormenting and missing you for days. - Don''t exaggerate. protested his uncle, unable to stop an amused laugh. I''m just a little... different these days, that''s all. - And in what way? - - A little melancholy and I might as well say nostalgic are filling me up. - Really? inquired the young magician skeptically. I don''t think it''s just that. - What else then? The great magician sighed, his mind returning to a place, or more precisely a past, ignored by all the beings belonging to his new life, and which in spite of himself, he missed terribly. - I remember a long time ago when I was, you know, he shook his head to find the right word. Whole. - Well, I don''t know about that time. Affirmed his "niece" calmly, considering her uncle''s distant expression with a disturbing jealousy. But it must have been exciting. - If only you knew how exciting. He confirmed in a broken voice. - But just looking at you," the young girl continued, "I feel that Bork was right, that many of us are worried. It even seems that a lot of your joy is gone. He nodded slowly without even having the decency to deny it. - Who knows... maybe that''s really the case. But that''s not what really matters. They looked together at the brightly colored canvas. - Is it because of him?" she finally said. Uncle Dobert breathed in, then sat up and spoke with touching volubility. - Did you know, my dear, that before I came here to Kolod, I was a close advisor to a ruler? More and more surprised, Avine shook her head. - No, I didn''t know that, that''s fantastic! she exclaimed, excited, and consumed with curiosity. - Isn''t it? It happened just before I came here to live on Kolod. Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. - Tell me about it! You owe me for telling me such a secret. Which ruler were you so close to? Uncle Dobert''s expression turned to one of ecstasy as he recalled his cherished past. - A ruler whose father was an emperor. You''ve probably already heard of Venezia? The empire of the night. - Yes, I did. Avine nodded. - His planet was much the same. It had been one of the most prosperous and envied that was, that it eventually fell and was abandoned. Dobert shook his head, his gaze clouded, seeing again those old years and the probably inevitable fall of this unique empire. As well as the separation with this dear one who had left him. - He was so young and impetuous, unable to be anything but himself - whole. He was capable of anything that could be conceived, the best and the worst. The throne was waiting for him. But probably everything was a little too heavy for him in the end. I finally recognized it though long after he had done it himself and tried to explain it to me. Whether it was his great magic, his personality or his incredible intelligence. He did great and irreparable things, he did them with the conviction that by his way of doing things, thinking with certainty that he would never regret any of his mistakes. But in the end, he had no choice but to assume all his actions. And because of that, we lost him. The young warrior radiated and threw through his winged beast, to his enemy of the darkness, a gigantic bursting fire that annihilated the latter without leaving anything. Then the picture changed and returned to the beginning of the battle. Repeating itself tirelessly. - He is beautiful, isn''t he? Avine saw his young face, thin, determined and unmistakably cruel. She nodded slowly, already hopelessly entranced at first sight. - Yes, he is. - I loved him, Avine. Uncle Dobert admitted only that it was already as obvious as the immeasurable magic of this young ruler painted on a whole wall with an unimaginable consecration. No one ever knew how much. He was the most important person in the universe to me. And you know what, only I understood that he had a passion for water. Or maybe that''s what I wanted to believe. His uncle apparently had an imperious and vital need to believe that he was sharing a secret known only to him with this fallen prince in order to continue to convince himself that he had, even for a moment, occupied a place in his existence, obviously doomed to failure. Then Airine understood why the other walls were decorated with these diverse, moving and intense paintings, whether it was a wild ocean, a soothing lake or a large river surrounded by a deep and colorful jungle where creatures of various races and colors were frolicking. - I watched him grow and become what he was, and what he was meant to be. He looked down for a moment. - I think he tried once, I don''t know why, to change, to get out of his disastrous nature. But in the end, nothing could stop him. Nothing, really. And certainly not me. His fate was simply inexorable. - I see. Ariadne said, thinking that this was what she had to say, although she didn''t understand anything. Not yet. - And then... he left. Never in her life had Avine heard such a desolate tone from anyone. So desolate that she didn''t know what to say or do, and just stood there silently and watched the minutes tick by, trying to soothe even a little of this deep, secret pain that she had no conception of, and that nothing, in the end, would heal. Then, she looked at this majestic being again, who was probably destined for great things, but unfortunately suffered an endless fall before reaching the much desired supremacy, and thus caused her uncle irreparable grief forever. As Dobert said, the young ruler was beautiful, more than that, magnificent. But despite his dazzlement, she was not totally convinced about his soul, for something about him disturbed her and made her feel deeply uneasy. She didn''t know exactly what bothered her so much, perhaps that strange dark gleam in his deep eyes, or the way he regarded his monstrous enemy, with that coldness and cruel expectation, or his gigantic powers that he used so drastically."
